The question facing big bank stocks like JPMorgan Chase & Co. (NYSE:JPM) is similar to that facing the market as a whole. How much upside really is left after a rally that’s now over nine years long? The JPM stock price today sits 176% higher than it did at the beginning of 2010 — an average return of roughly 13% a year. JPMorgan stock has gained 74% just since the beginning of 2016.
At some point, that rally would seem likely to reverse. JPM stock did stumble in February, but it’s already recaptured those losses. Indeed, it trades just a point or two from its all-time highs.
Despite those gains, however, it’s not as if JPMorgan stock looks all that expensive. In fact, it looks rather cheap. JPM trades at less than 12 times forward earnings, though a 1.75 price-to-book ratio ratio is the highest since the financial crisis. And the news surrounding JPMorgan Chase looks good as well. Fed rate hikes should help spreads, and profits. The loan book seems solid; 2018 should be an extremely solid year in terms of earnings growth.

But the changing consumer behavior has hit the brick and mortar chains hard. In a press release, Macy’s (NYSE:M) announced that it would be closing 68 stores and laying off more than 10000 people after the company reported a dismal quarter. The same store sales declined by 2.1%. It is not Macy’s alone, other departmental stores are facing similar challenges. The holiday season report led to ablood bath in retail stocks yesterday. Macy’s was down 13%, JCP (NYSE:JCP) down 7.2% and Kohl’s (NYSE:KSS) was down 19%. Those are pretty scary numbers. On the other hand, Amazon stock gained more than 3% yesterday.

Bonds behaved poorly. The 10 year and long bond rose by between 3-4 basis points in yield. I bought a trading position in iShares Barclays 20+ Yr Treas.Bond ETF (TLT) in front of a possible yearend pension rebalance. Big pharma stinks up the joint, again. Spec biotech is weakening again (Portola Pharmaceuticals PTLA, ACADIA Pharmaceuticals ACAD, etc.) Retail cant get out of its way. I am long JC Penney (JCP) and have trading positions in Kohl’s (KSS) and Macy’s (M) . (Nike (NKE) , Nordstrom (JWN) , Lowe’s (LOW) are downside features).

Other department-store chains, such as Macy’s (NYSE:M), J.C. Penney (NYSE:JCP), and Kohl’s (NYSE:KSS), have also seen their stock prices plummet as they struggle with falling traffic and declining comparable-store sales. Consumer buying habits continue to shift away from their core mall-based operations, with department-store sales down for 11 years in a row, according to data from the Commerce Department.

Last week, General Dynamics fell to the lower end of its channel, but then it bounced right to the high end, and Wednesday it firmly broke out above the high end of this channel. The stochastic oscillator, which is a powerful momentum indicator is making a bullish crossover, and based on today’s move, Moreno thinks General Dynamics can return to its old highs at $230.
