In the 1980s and 1990s, David Marcus cut his teeth under investing legend &l;a href=&s;;&g;Michael Price&l;/a&g;, learning to analyze stocks selling or 50-cents on the dollar. Now running the $684 million in assets Evermore Global Value Fund, Marcus&a;nbsp;hunts for breakups, restructurings and spinoffs, combing the world for misunderstood or underperforming companies where positive reorganization is afoot.

If you had to sum up Marcus&s;s style in three words, it would be &q;cheap but catalysts,&q; as he says. Normally Evermore gets into investments when uncertainty is high but he can identity management decisions or corporate actions that show a turnaround is in the offing. Recently, Evermore took a position in ailing European steel and&a;nbsp;industrial conglomerate ThyssenKrupp, believing shareholder disquiet led by Elliott Management and new management would help drive a refocus of underperforming company. Last week, ThyssenKrupp shares surged when it announced it would split into two public companies, one focused on elevators and automotive supplies and the other on steel manufacturing. It was a classic Marcus investment.

    About Compass Minerals International

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Few people look forward to winter more than investors in seasonal businesses that do a lot of business during the cold-weather months, and Compass Minerals International (NYSE:CMP) falls squarely into that category. With so much of its business coming from state and municipal governments treating roads and other surfaces with salt and anti-icing products, Compass often sees a lot of its success come during this part of the year.

  • [By Reuben Gregg Brewer]

Compass Minerals International, Inc. (NYSE:CMP) is often listed as a miner, but the salt and fertilizer it produces are a bit different than what most investors think of when they hear the word “miner.” That makes Compass something of an odd duck and results in it being off of most investors’ radar screens. A tough 2017 is another net negative. That’s a shame, since it currently sports a yield of more than 4.4%, and the business outlook is improving. Here’s what investors are missing out on with this high-yield stock.

Further concerns about the potential for a deepening divide between the U.S. and China weighed on sentiment, and some also fear that steadily rising interest rates could eventually put pressure on stocks. Yet some companies still had good news that sent their individual shares higher. Rent-A-Center (NASDAQ:RCII), PTC Therapeutics (NASDAQ:PTCT), and Dropbox (NASDAQ:DBX) were among the best performers on the day. Here’s why they did so well.

Heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) company Ingersoll-Rand PLC (NYSE:IR) is a better stock to buy than process automation company Emerson Electric (NYSE:EMR), but that doesn’t mean the latter isn’t also compelling. Both stocks offer strong free cash flow generations, healthy dividend yields, and attractive valuations. Let’s take a look at the two businesses, and see just why Ingersoll-Rand edges out its fellow electrical equipment company.

It’s not widely discussed, but the U.S. industrial economy fell into a recession for a brief period in 2015 and 2016, a downturn largely caused by falling energy prices and mining output, which in turn led to declines in heavy industries’ capital spending. The knock-on effects were seen in areas like construction and process automation. That hit companies like Emerson Electric (NYSE:EMR) hard.
