Redfin’s (NASDAQ:RDFN) first-quarter results show that the technology-powered residential real estate brokerage continues to gain share in the $31.8 trillion U.S. housing market. Its low fees are resonating with home sellers and its online marketplace is enjoying strengthening network effects, helping to drive its revenue sharply higher.

Surging traffic

Redfin’s market share increased to 0.73% of U.S. existing home sales by value, up 0.15% from the first quarter of 2017. The company’s low commissions continue to fuel its expansion.

“What drove that growth is the power of our 1% pricing for listing a home,” CEO Glenn Kelman said in a press release. “Being able to sell homes for more money at a lower fee is a major competitive advantage, and it’s easy for consumers to understand.”

Redfin is pressing this advantage by ramping up its marketing investments. This helped to drive a 28% year-over-year spike in traffic to its website and mobile apps.

The consolidation/compression seen since November has set the stage, and SGOCO is no stranger to big leaps. We’ll take a shot on the breakout happening, knowing the floor is strong and the ceiling is weak.”

Hot Warren Buffett Stocks To Own For 2018: AMTEK, Inc.(AME)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Flexing the barbell strategy to balance Safe Havens with more cyclical exposures. In our view, industrials investors should be positioning their portfolio with a barbell strategy, with half of the exposure in Safe Havens like General Electric, Xylem (XYL), Danaher, Honeywell International, Roper Technologies (ROP), and AMETEK (AME), and the other half selectively in the cyclical names that are better positioned today, such as Pentair, HD Supply Holdings (HDS),Actuant (ATU), Atkore International Group (ATKR), Ingersoll-Rand, and Eaton (ETN). We still believe risk-reward is mostly balanced and that the macro will remain choppy into 2017, supporting a positioning in the defensive names. But if investor sentiment improves on not-worse news and earnings results, the more cyclical names could fare better.
