Top Energy Stocks To Invest In 2019

One of the greatest strategies for investors is cultivating a watchlist. Personally, keeping a list of stocks under constant supervision has mitigated the probability that I’ll overreact and execute trades on a whim, without investigating them adequately.

In all likelihood, some stocks may never make it off the list. For example, as much as I’m rooting for Tesla to succeed in reimagining the transportation landscape, the stock has remained on my radar for years — never the subject of a buy order — and I realize it may linger on said watchlist indefinitely.

Beyond that, there are numerous stocks, like IAMGOLD (NYSE: IAG) and FuelCell Energy (NASDAQ: FCEL), which I’m certain will not only remain absent from my portfolio but from my watchlist as well. Here’s why:

Top Energy Stocks To Invest In 2019: Crestwood Equity Partners LP(CEQP)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Reuben Gregg Brewer]

Crestwood Equity Partners LP (NYSE:CEQP) isn’t a household name, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth getting to know a little better. In fact, the midstream partnership is working with a few companies you may have heard of before, like New York utility Consolidated Edison, Inc. (NYSE:ED). And while leverage is an issue to watch, partnering up with companies like Con Ed should allow Crestwood to keep growing while keeping leverage to a minimum. Here’s some of the details you’ll want to know if Crestwood’s 7.5% distribution yield interests you.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Four that stand out are Crestwood Equity Partners (NYSE:CEQP), TerraForm Power (NASDAQ:TERP), Brookfield Infrastructure Partners (NYSE:BIP), and W.P. Carey (NYSE:WPC). Not only does each currently offer more than double the yield of the average bank CD and stock in the S&P, but those income streams are likely to grow in the coming years.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Crestwood Equity Partners’ (NYSE:CEQP) first-quarter results once again showed that it’s heading in the right direction. As a result, the company is on pace to create significant value for investors over the next couple of years. That was the key message CEO Bob Phillips wanted to get across on the accompanying conference call, where he laid out four reasons why he thinks the company is an extremely compelling investment opportunity right now.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

While Crestwood Equity Partners (NYSE:CEQP) isn’t a well-known name, it should be, especially by income-seeking investors. That’s because the high-yielding master limited partnership (MLP) offers an increasingly compelling combination of current income and future upside backed by strong financial metrics and clearly visible growth prospects. The company’s strong core and upside potential was on full display during the first quarter, which once again showed that this is an excellent income stock to own for the long haul.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Meanwhile, Williams Companies recently announced several strategic moves that position it for additional growth. First, the company and its 50-50 joint venture partner, Crestwood Equity Partners (NYSE:CEQP), agreed to expand their Jackalope Gas Gathering System and the associated Bucking Horse gas processing plant in Wyoming’s Powder River Basin to support the growth of Chesapeake Energy (NYSE:CHK). Williams and Crestwood expect to finish the first phase of this expansion by the end of 2019, which coincides with Chesapeake’s plan to double its output from the region in the next year. They also noted that further expansions of the system might be needed soon, since regional growth could use up all its capacity by 2021.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

First, the company and its joint venture (JV) partner Crestwood Equity Partners (NYSE:CEQP) approved the expansion of their Jackalope gathering and processing business in the Powder River Basin. The expansion projects will supply Williams with some incremental cash flow as they come on line over the next year, while giving the smaller Crestwood some additional fuel to help grow its earnings at a 15% compound annual rate through 2020.

Top Energy Stocks To Invest In 2019: Ballard Power Systems, Inc.(BLDP)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Maxx Chatsko]

That may not be surprising to investors considering the massive Chinese market has lifted diverse sectors and industries in the last two decades, but China may prove critical to the success of struggling fuel cell stocks. Can Ballard Power Systems (NASDAQ:BLDP) and Plug Power (NASDAQ:PLUG) capitalize on the opportunity in the East?

  • [By Travis Hoium]

Shares of Ballard Power Systems Inc (NASDAQ:BLDP) jumped as much as 24.1% in trading Tuesday after the company announced a large strategic investment. At 12:40 p.m. EDT, shares were still up 16.7% on the day.

That much becomes clear after taking a look at fuel cell stocks Plug Power (NASDAQ:PLUG) and Ballard Power Systems (NASDAQ:BLDP). The companies generated just $235 million in revenue combined last year. While that would seem to indicate that the technology has a ways to go, a closer look shows both companies are on an upward trajectory as they position to exploit decarbonization trends. It also reveals two different growth strategies.

Top Performing Stocks To Watch Right Now

In this segment from MarketFoolery, host Mac Greer is joined by Motley Fool analysts Jason Moser and Taylor Muckerman to dig into the current situation at Arconic (NYSE:ARNC), which until late 2016 was the parts manufacturing division of aluminum giant Alcoa.

In the year and a half since it was spun off, the company has been underperforming expectations somewhat, but its real problems began when President Trump started heating up his trade wars. And those troubles make Arconic a tempting target.

A full transcript follows the video.

This video was recorded on July 16, 2018.

Mac Greer: Shares of Arconic surging on buyout rumors. Taylor, when I heard this story, my first big question was, what is Arconic? Then I did some crackerjack research. They make aeronautical parts out of aluminum. This is never a phrase you want to see — a Bloomberg characterized Arconic as a “beleaguered manufacturer.”

Taylor Muckerman: This company was born out of Alcoa, which is traditionally the company that kicks off earnings season every quarter. They split this company in half not too long ago. Alcoa kept the aluminum-producing side, Arconic got the aluminum parts manufacturing side.

The stock market came out of Labor Day weekend on a sluggish note, but it recovered ground by the end of the session to finish close to where it had started. Lingering doubts about the status of trade discussions with key trading partners initially caused major benchmarks to fall around half a percent in the morning. Once again, though, stocks proved their resiliency, and investors seemed more comfortable with the idea that corporate earnings would remain strong at least through the end of the year. Moreover, some strong showings from key stocks helped lift sentiment. Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:AMD), Ballard Power Systems (NASDAQ:BLDP), and El Pollo Loco Holdings (NASDAQ:LOCO) were among the best performers on the day. Here’s why they did so well.

German Consumer Price Index rose 2.2 percent over the year in May, above market expectations of 1.9 percent y/y increase.
Energy prices accelerated strongly in May reflecting the oil price surge.
With political uncertainty rising in Italy, the asset purchasing is likely to be prolonged until the year-end in June.

German inflation in May surprised on the upside with the 2.2 percent year-to-year increase in May with the energy prices being the main driver of inflation on both domestic and the harmonized basis. German inflation is currently at the highest level since February 2017.

“A major reason for the increase in the inflation rate is the price development for liquid fuels, heating oil and motor fuels,” the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reported on Wednesday.

While preliminary inflation data are not available in full structure, Destatis is publishing the main inflation components to hint the biggest inflation contributors. Looking at the main component, the food prices rose 3.5 percent over the year in May while energy prices rose 5.2 percent y/y and services prices rose 1.9 percent y/y in May. That means, the the core inflation that strips the headline inflation off food and the energy prices is likely to have remained subdued in May.

Below, we’ll look more closely at these stocks to tell you why they did so well.

Fuel cell stocks tend to be more volatile than the average equity, owing at least in part to the ever-changing business models of the industry. But even that makes it difficult to explain the wild ride Ballard Power Systems (NASDAQ:BLDP) shareholders have been on in the last year.

  • [By Scott Levine]

Riding the wave of enthusiasm for alternative power, Plug Power (NASDAQ:PLUG) has made great strides in bringing its hydrogen-power solutions to the materials handling equipment market. Thanks, in part, to deals with the world’s largest retailers like Walmart and Amazon, Plug Power has grown its top line at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 21% over the past 10 years. This is no small feat considering that Ballard Power Systems (NASDAQ:BLDP), which is arguably Plug Power’s greatest fuel-cell competitor, has only grown its top line by an average of 8% annually over the same period.

Top 10 Energy Stocks To Own Right Now: Ballard Power Systems, Inc.(BLDP)

Advisors’ Opinion:

Fuel cell stocks tend to be more volatile than the average equity, owing at least in part to the ever-changing business models of the industry. But even that makes it difficult to explain the wild ride Ballard Power Systems (NASDAQ:BLDP) shareholders have been on in the last year.

  • [By Maxx Chatsko]

That much becomes clear after taking a look at fuel cell stocks Plug Power (NASDAQ:PLUG) and Ballard Power Systems (NASDAQ:BLDP). The companies generated just $235 million in revenue combined last year. While that would seem to indicate that the technology has a ways to go, a closer look shows both companies are on an upward trajectory as they position to exploit decarbonization trends. It also reveals two different growth strategies.

Top 10 Energy Stocks To Watch Right Now

While stock prices continue to bounce around following their tumble earlier this year, crude oil is back near new highs. In fact, despite the stock markets super run in 2017, crude oil actually outperformed stocks starting in June. And it continues to do so here in April 2018.

That means investors have a choice during the current volatile environment for stocks. And that does not necessarily mean speculating in commodities. Energy stocks representing companies that explore, drill, produce and refine oil finally look positioned to lead the stock market to the upside.

How can this be? For years, the fundamentals of black gold were rather dour. It was fairly common to see headlines saying, the world is awash in oil or crude oil inventories rise again. Indeed, the U.S. became a net exporter of oil in May 2011 and the third-largest producer of crude oil in 2014, after Saudi Arabia and Russia.

Already, shale companies such as Encana (ECA) , Occidental Petroleum (OXY) and Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD) , among others, are reporting higher cash flows and earnings on higher oil prices. As a result, they are paying down debt, increasing dividends and engaging in buybacks. This is a dramatic improvement in shareholder yield for the group.

Early on Monday, analysts at Deutsche Bank lowered their price target on Occidental Petroleum Corporation (OXY) to reflect a lower-than-expected valuation of an asset that the oil and gas exploration company is trying to sell.

Though the analysts lowered OXY’s price target from $114 to $109, they still maintain a “Buy” rating on the stock. The new price target suggests a 22% upside to the stock’s Friday closing price of $89.49.

Deutsche Bank analyst Paul Sankey said, “Bloomberg Finance LP reports that Oxy is seeking sale of 40% of Mideast operations for around $8bn, which would imply $20bn total value for the unit. However reportedly some suitors are valuing the asset at around $15bn. This is a relatively negative valuation against our previous view that Oxy would be seeking $25+bn for its MENA business. We are cutting our price target to $109/share to reflect this lower implied valuation.”

Occidental Petroleum shares were up 96 cents, or 1.07%, during pre-market trading on Monday. The stock is up 16.81% year-to-date.
