Potash Cartel Breakup Has Weighed on This Agriculture ETF

The ETF’s unit price declined in the first half of 2013, partly because of the breakup of the Belarusian Potash Company (BPC), through which Russia’s Uralkali, the world’s No. 1 potash producer, and Belaruskali of Belarus distribute their potash. The market is dominated by BPC and Canpotex, owned by Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan (NYSE: POT), Mosaic and Agrium Inc. (NYSE: AGU).

Together, the two cartels control 70% of global potash exports, so the breakup of BPC will result in a more fractured market, which seems likely to push potash prices lower. Shares of major potash producers fell sharply on the news, as did Market Vectors Agribusiness ETF due to its potash stock holdings, which include Agrium, Potash Corp. and Mosaic.

Oracle – the facts please, just the facts

I like to start out these articles with some reference to the music I like to listen to-but I can’t always find exactly the right piece of lyric and I don’t like to stretch. So, I found a line from a TV show from my youth that has been reprised in the recent past. And it totally fits the case with Oracle (NASDAQ:ORCL) whose management team, with or without malice aforethought, does the best job in the enterprise IT space in spinning the facts at an ever increasing velocity.

Oracle management talked about its quarter as though it were a thing of beauty. It was anything but and the company missed both top line and earnings estimates despite its success in the cloud. Oracle management spoke glowingly about its prospects. The specific guidance they gave suggested that they are concerned about just how well they are doing. And Oracle decided to declare war on Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN), Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) and presumably Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL)-not perhaps a development I would classify as the best thought through strategy. Oracle shares were down for Friday and they have done little for months. The immediate downside is probably minor. But there are many other large cap growth names with dividends that make better choices with which to secure positive alpha.

Top 10 Stocks To Invest In Right Now: SanDisk Corporation(SNDK)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Michael Flannelly]

Early on Friday, analysts at RBC Capital boosted the near-term estimates on SanDisk Corporation (SNDK), a manufacturer of data storage products, because a fire at SK Hynix’s factory should lead to favorable pricing over the next two quarters.

“We see a favorable pricing environment as a result of SK Hynix’s fire, which threatens to curtail NAND output as the company likely re-purposes production back toward DRAM, resulting in lower than expected incremental NAND wafers vs. company’s plan of 170K/WPM,” RBC Capital analyst Freedman said. “Consequently, we see stronger pricing through EoY before SK Hynix ramps NAND toward normalized prod’t levels as DRAM resources are restored/replaced.”

The analysts maintain an “Outperform” rating on SDNK and still see shares reaching $76. This price target suggests a 26% upside to the stock’s Thursday closing price of $60.08. Furthermore, they boosted SanDisk’s 2013 EPS estimates from $4.82 to $4.95.

SanDisk shares were up a fraction during pre-market trading on Friday. The stock is up 38.11% year-to-date.

Top 10 Stocks To Invest In Right Now: Terra Nitrogen Company L.P.(TNH)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Robert Rapier] While the MLP space is dominated by the oil and gas sector, in last week’s article we began to explore some of the more exotic master limited partnership offerings. This week we continue our exploration of nontraditional MLPs by looking at the partnerships supplying fertilizer.

Rentech (Nasdaq: RTK) has been around for more than a decade, and it has shifted strategies several times. Full disclosure: Rentech’s Chief Technology Officer Harold Wright is a former manager of mine when we were both at ConocoPhillips, and I have visited Rentech’s facility in Commerce City, Colorado.

For most of Rentech’s existence, the company has sought to commercialize alternative fuels. At one time it had ambitions to build a large coal-to-liquids (CTL) plant, but federal legislation ultimately nudged it instead into the biomass-to-liquids (BTL) space. The company did build a BTL demonstration plant, but ultimately shut it down and has now refocused its efforts on becoming “one of the largest wood processing companies in the world.”

During its interesting journey as a company, Rentech acquired two ammonia nitrogen fertilizer facilities, which turned out to be a profit center that funded the alternative energy research. In November 2011, Rentech spun off this fertilizer business into an MLP called Rentech Nitrogen Partners LP (NYSE: RNF).

In the months leading to the spin-off, RTK’s market capitalization was about $200 million. Rentech maintained 60 percent ownership of RNF, and three months after the spin-off RTK’s market cap had risen to $400 million, while investors had bid RNF up to $1 billion. Interestingly, RTK’s share of RNF was worth more than RTK’s entire market cap, a situation that persists. The market currently values Rentech at $482 million, while the valuation of Rentech Nitrogen Partners makes RTK’s 60 percent stake in RNF worth slightly more than $600 million — another illu
