Best Blue Chip Stocks For 2019

When I initiated coverage on Xerox (NYSE:XRX), I concluded that the stock wasn’t dead, and in January, I opined the name was also not “dead money.” That is important to reiterate. But this once stellar blue chip has certainly fallen from grace, big time. I then told you that the company was “not dead yet.” But friends, are we approaching the death of Xerox? I mean, it has been struggling for a long time. I suggested on nice dips you could buy simply for the yield and collect the dividend, but growth was nowhere to be found. I said had in my prior work numerous times that we needed to see some improvement in the underlying metrics before I could get behind the name. Well, in the past three months, the stock has moved sideways to higher, but will there be sustained momentum? That is tough to tell, but the name has been downgraded and the most recent earnings were not great.

The truth is that performance has been pitiful of late and is the reason shares have declined. Well here, Q3 shows that there are still declining revenues. Revenue as a whole came in at $4.21 billion, and this messed estimates by $100 million. However, this was also down 5.4% year over year, continuing a string of declining quarters. In addition the degree of declining revenues seems to be picking up and this is real bad news. Of course, as I have discussed in-depth in other articles, the strong dollar has hurt companies with international businesses.

Redfin’s (NASDAQ:RDFN) first-quarter results show that the technology-powered residential real estate brokerage continues to gain share in the $31.8 trillion U.S. housing market. Its low fees are resonating with home sellers and its online marketplace is enjoying strengthening network effects, helping to drive its revenue sharply higher.

Surging traffic

Redfin’s market share increased to 0.73% of U.S. existing home sales by value, up 0.15% from the first quarter of 2017. The company’s low commissions continue to fuel its expansion.

“What drove that growth is the power of our 1% pricing for listing a home,” CEO Glenn Kelman said in a press release. “Being able to sell homes for more money at a lower fee is a major competitive advantage, and it’s easy for consumers to understand.”

Redfin is pressing this advantage by ramping up its marketing investments. This helped to drive a 28% year-over-year spike in traffic to its website and mobile apps.

Top 5 Tech Stocks For 2019: Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc.(TTWO)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

The video game industry has gotten crowded, and that’s put even giants like Take-Two Interactive Software (NASDAQ:TTWO) into a difficult position. Blockbuster releases like the long-awaited Red Dead Redemption 2 are instrumental for a company’s long-term success, but high expectations make it very difficult for the company to meet all of the expectations investors build up during the long wait between such releases. Sometimes, that means what appear to be strong gains nevertheless fall short of what people want to see.

  • [By Rich Smith]

Last week, two of the biggest names in the industry, Electronic Arts (NASDAQ:EA) and Take-Two Interactive (NASDAQ:TTWO), both reported their financial results for the final quarter of 2018. EA reported an 11% gain in sales year over year — but missed earnings expectations big time. Boosted by the success of Red Dead Redemption 2 (RDR2) Take-Two scored an even bigger sales gain of 160%…and also missed earnings. Both companies announced guidance well below expectations, and suffered sell-offs as a result.

Even in Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s electoral stronghold, businessmen like Halit Ozkaya can’t help but complain about the currency crisis the president instigated just weeks before elections.

The chairman of steel and copper cable maker Has Celik was forced to halt metal imports in May when Erdogan sent the lira into freefall by vowing to interfere in monetary policy if he wins on June 24. Now Ozkaya is worried Turkey is on the cusp of a debt crisis.

Hot Undervalued Stocks To Buy Right Now

We continue to believe that financial stocks are quite undervalued as well. During the quarter we made a new investment in Ally Financial (NYSE:ALLY). Ally was founded nearly a century ago as General Motors Acceptance Corporation. Its purpose then was to provide financing to GM dealers and retail customers. Today, Ally is no longer owned by GM. It serves a wide variety of dealers (including Ford, Chrysler and Toyota), and it is carefully building a consumer franchise. In our view, investors are myopically concerned that the auto business is at a cyclical peak. U.S. auto sales are near record levels, and credit losses are below long-term averages. Some believe Ally’s earnings have nowhere to go but down. We believe cyclical pressures will be more than offset by continued internal improvements, such as funding cost reductions (low-cost online deposits grew 19% in the third quarter of 2016) and improving the capital structure. With Ally’s stock trading at roughly 68% of tangible book value, we believe Ally is a compelling addition to the Oakmark Select Fund. We didn’t eliminate any positions during the quarter and exit 2016 with 20 investments in the portfolio.

The delay in an FDA decision for Tegsedi puts it behind competitor Alnylam Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:ALNY), which expects to hear from the FDA by Aug. 11 for its hATTR drug patisiran. But Sarah Boyce, the president at Akcea Therapeutics, doesn’t think a few months will really matter: “We don’t really feel that’s going to have any impact and the drugs will be close enough together from a launch perspective. So not really [going] to make any adjustments, and we’re very well prepared to be ready to launch following approval.”

I wrote three months ago that I viewed Alnylam Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:ALNY) stock as a pretty good pick — but with a couple of qualifications. First, I didn’t think that the biotech would generate returns in 2018 nearly as great as it did last year. Second, I thought that there were even better stocks to buy than Alnylam.

Hot Undervalued Stocks To Buy Right Now: L Brands, Inc.(LB)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Asit Sharma]

Stock in specialty retailer L Brands, Inc. (NYSE:LB) slumped 22.5% in March, according to data fromS&P Global Market Intelligence.

L Brands’ woes began on the first day of the month, as shares lost nearly 14% in the first trading session following the company’s February 28 release of fourth-quarter and full-year 2017 earnings. Although fourth-quarter sales rose 7.4%, to $4.8 billion, comparable sales improved by just 2 percentage points. Breaking down comparable sales results, “comps” at Victoria’s Secret retail stores declined 6% during the last six months. Deteriorating traffic into Victoria’s Secret’s largely mall-based stores is a significant point of concern for shareholders — the segment is responsible for nearly 60% of total company revenue.

Siebert Financial has been on our watchlist for a while, overbought and toying with the idea of a pullback. We’re finally starting to see evidence that the weight of the gain is taking a toll. We’ve seen a string of lower highs following the last bullish gasp from the 9th. We’re going to assume that was the pivot point. (It has been so far, anyway.)

Top 10 Performing Stocks To Watch For 2018: Cincinnati Financial Corporation(CINF)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Cincinnati Financial (CINF) tumbled to the bottom of the S&P 500 today after the insurer warned of larger catastrophe losses and lower reserve releases.

    Cincinnati Financialdropped 6.7% to $69.91 today, while the S&P 500 declined 0.2% to 2,270.44.

Sandler O’Neil’s Paul Newsome and team explain why Cincinnati Financial got hammered today:

On January 12, 2017, before the market opened, CINF pre-announced 4Q16 catastrophe loss estimates and underwriting results. The company expects 4Q16 earnings to include pre-tax catastrophe losses of approximately $75 million to $85 million, representing an impact on the combined ratio of approximately 6.5 to 7.5 percentage points, based on estimated property casualty earned premiums…

While the press release headline led with higher catastrophe losses, the real issue was less favorable reserve development related to the companys commercial casualty line.Cincinnati Financial has been growing faster than its peers for some time. The company has been growing primarily due to geographic expansion which is better than growth through price cutting. Nevertheless, growth during a soft market is difficult and the fourth quarter profit warning will likely lead to renewed concerns thatCincinnati Financial cannot maintain its excellent profitability in its commercial insurance business.

Cincinnati Financial’s market capitalization fell to $11.5 billion today from $12.3 billion yesterday. It reported net income of $634 million on sales of $5.2 billion in 2015.
