Top 10 Blue Chip Stocks For 2019

Should I stay or should I go?

If you’ve been singing this 1981 tune by the English punk rock band The Clash to yourself since late September, you are not alone.

In the fourth-quarter selloff last year, U.S. equities lost $4 trillion in combined market value. For those who had chosen to stay and not to go, a sharp market bounce has helped recover much of the losses: after the 17% rally off the December low, the S&P 500 has now returned to early January 2018 levels.

For the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100, the decline was deeper, but the bounce was sharper. At its lowest levels of 2018, the Nasdaq was down 23% from its highs. Since its December lows, though, it has rallied some 19%.

As a result, the Nasdaq is now higher by about 10% from its 2017 levels.

Around a year ago, the partners launched an eczema drug that’s already surpassed Praluent on the sales charts, and a possible expansion to asthma could send Dupixent sales through the roof. In studies supporting an application under review at the moment, Dupixent reduced severe attacks by up to 67% for some patients with uncontrolled asthma. It also led to lung function measurements that suggest it can compete with GlaxoSmithKline’s (NYSE:GSK) Nucula for a slice of a global market for asthma treatments expected to reach $56.5 billion by 2025.

Because Heplisav-B requires fewer doses and is reportedly more potent than GlaxoSmithKline’s (NYSE:GSK) market-leading Engerix-B, investors seem to have gotten the impression that the vaccine’s commercial launch would be smooth sailing right out of the gate. The unfortunate reality, though, is that this is Dynavax’s first commercial launch of any kind, and it takes time to build relationships with key opinion leaders, third-party payers, and physicians.

If you haven’t looked at GlaxoSmithKline (NYSE:GSK) and Eli Lilly (NYSE:LLY) in several years, you probably wouldn’t recognize them today. Eli Lilly recently spun off its animal health segment, and Glaxo’s merging its consumer health business with Pfizer’s (NYSE:PFE).

Wall Street had a down day on Thursday, with the trade-sensitive industrial side of the market seeing the largest declines on news that the U.S. and Canada had imposed a set of matching tariffs on each other. The Dow lost more than 200 points, but declines were somewhat less extensive on a percentage basis for other parts of the market. Crude oil prices also moved lower, and the general sense among investors was one of uncertainty about how these initial disputes would evolve over time. Moreover, some bad news from key sectors of the economy weighed on individual stocks. Dollar Tree (NASDAQ:DLTR), Guess? (NYSE:GES), and Micron Technology (NASDAQ:MU) were among the worst performers on the day. Below, we’ll look more closely at these stocks to tell you why they did so poorly.

Things aren’t going to script right now in the financial sector. It’s a widely established fact (based on years of historical evidence) that banks and other lenders typically prosper when interest rates are rising. In previous rate-tightening cycles, the financial sector was usually among the market’s top performers.

As I’ve discussed before in my High-Yield Investing premium newsletter, banks can feast in these conditions because the rates they charge borrowers on loans usually rise faster than the rates they pay to depositors. That widens net interest margins (NIMs) and fattens the bottom line.

Still, some individual stocks underperformed the indexes. Read on to learn why Gannett (NYSE:GCI), Barnes & Noble (NYSE:BKS), and Samsung Electronics (NASDAQOTH:SSNLF) fell today.

  • [By Chris Lange]

Barnes & Noble Inc. (NYSE: BKS) has been the markets punching bag over the past couple of years, and things dont seem to be changing anytime soon. The bookstore released its most recent quarterly results before the markets opened on Thursday, and this was met with investor trepidation.

  • [By Rich Duprey]

My colleague Dan Kline believes there’s also an opportunity for Barnes & Noble (NYSE:BKS) to gain share in this space. Best known for books, it has also long been a retailer of specialty toys and games, and opening up its shelves to more mass-market toys could give it a wedge into the industry.Certainly this is a possibility, but like Walmart, Target, and other retailers, Barnes & Noble has no special knowledge or expertise in the space to allow it to make a grand entrance. It’s just not a market it knows well, which means that another type of retailer that could make a pronounced move in the space faces the same kinds of hurdles.

  • [By Daniel B. Kline]

That leaves a hole in the market, one that will be filled partially by independent stores, but still leaves an opportunity for one struggling retailer. Unfortunately, the CEO of that retailer, Barnes & Noble (NYSE:BKS), has recently commented that his chain plans to reduce its assortment of toys.

Top 5 Warren Buffett Stocks For 2019

It does not seem as if legendary value investor Seth Klarman (Trades, Portfolio), founder of the Baupost Group, is very confident about the seemingly incessant rise in U.S. stock markets. That puts him at odds with Warren Buffett (Trades, Portfolio), who seems as confident as ever in American markets.

In his recent letter, Klarman notes the markets are currently at “perilously high valuations.” Driving these valuations were “exuberant investors” who have “focused on the potential benefits of stimulative tax cuts, while mostly ignoring the risks from America-first protectionism and the erection of new trade barriers.” He believes the current political climate may “drive government deficits considerably higher,” potentially proving “quite inflationary, which would likely shock investors.”

Buffett has taken the opposite approach, deploying over $30 billion since the presidential election. Investments include roughly 43 million shares of Southwest Airlines (NYSE:LUV) and just over 57 million shares of Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL).

Top 5 Warren Buffett Stocks For 2019: National Beverage Corp.(FIZZ)

Still, some individual companies fared worse than most. Read on to learn why Sonic Corporation (NASDAQ:SONC), National Beverage (NASDAQ:FIZZ), and Aquinox Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:AQXP)plunged today.

  • [By Billy Duberstein]

That epic line was penned by National Beverage(NASDAQ:FIZZ)CEO-turned-wordsmith Nick Caporella in the company’srecent annual report (the company fiscal year ends in April).

  • [By Jeremy Bowman]

The company appears to have solved that problem by remaking itself as a sparkling water brand. Not only does that make the product more attractive from a pricing perspective as it’s competing with more expensive bottled waters, but the company is now benefiting from tailwinds in consumer trends as more consumers are drinking bottled and sparkling water in part because of its perceived health benefits compared to soda.Shares ofNational Beverage(NASDAQ:FIZZ) have soared recently on the strength of LaCroix, the flavored sparkling water brand that has developed a following among millennials. In the U.S., sparkling water sales were expected to grow by more than a third last year and from 2011 to 2017 sales of the fizzy water.

  • [By Motley Fool Staff]

But in the world of investing, it’s vital that we be able to trust the numbers companies report, and the Securities and Exchange Commission isn’t entirely sure we can when it comes to National Beverage (NASDAQ:FIZZ), seller of sparkling water LaCroix, as well as classic soda brands Faygo and Shasta. In essence, the SEC suggested that the company was being a bit too creative in terms of the metrics it was using to describe sales growth — possibly because the metrics themselves didn’t have a clear definition. So, what should Foolish investors think about all this? The guys have some advice.

  • [By Brian Feroldi]

I’ve personally made several profitable investments over the last decade by simply observing my own buying habits. Here are a few recent examples:

My family rarely eats out, but when we do we like to buy from healthier quick-service restaurants, such asChipotle (NYSE:CMG) or Panera Bread, instead of full-service restaurants or traditional fast food placesWendy’s or McDonald’s. My wife and I have eliminated soda from our lives. The only beverages that I drink now are water andStarbucks (NASDAQ:SBUX) coffee. My wife prefers to drink sparkling water like National Beverages’ (NASDAQ:FIZZ) La Croix brand. We mostly buy organic food and we love to shop at stores like Whole Foods (now owned by Amazon.com) and Trader Joes. We ditched cable a few years ago and now all of our entertainment needs aremet by streaming services that are offered by Amazon.com, Netflix, and Alphabet’s YouTube. Most of our household items and gifts that are purchased online at Amazon.com or Wayfair.

I’d bet that if you reviewed your credit card statements, you’d quickly recognize a few patterns as well. Ask yourself: Are there anyretails stores or restaurant concepts that you frequent now but didn’t before? Are there any new foods or drinks that you now buy from the grocery store? Have you become a raving fan of a particular website or app?

Increasing debt is the not only a problem for the federal government; it’s also a growing burden for U.S. consumers.

According to the New York Fed’s latest Quarterly Report on Household Debt and Credit, household debt rose in 2017 for the fifth consecutive year. In the fourth quarter of 2017, household debt grew 1.5% from the third quarter to $13.15 trillion. That’s equivalent to 68% of U.S. GDP.

Debt increased in all major categories: in mortgages (1.6%), student loans (up 1.5%), auto loans (up 0.7%) and credit cards (up 3.2%), but fell 0.9% for home equity loans.

Although credit card debt led the fourth-quarter debt increase, consumers owe far less in credit card debt than in all other major categories, just $834 billion, compared with $8.88 trillion for mortgages, $1.38 trillion for student loans and $1.22 trillion for auto loans.

Top 10 Value Stocks To Watch Right Now

It is no secret that the bull market has continues to surge in 2018. It is now almost nine years old, and investors have been trying to figure how to best position themselves for the rest of 2018 and beyond. Earnings season is delivering some serious winners for investors, and companies generally are raising guidance on the heels of tax reform. Included benefits are coming from overseas capital repatriation, immediate capital expensing, accelerated earnings growth and a broader economic growth story.

With the S&P 500 rising over 19% in 2017, it was last seen up over 7% so far in 2018, and that’s with the first month not even fully over. The Nasdaq 100 was last seen up almost 10% for 2018 after less than a full month, and Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) was last seen up over 19% this month alone. And that’s before the earnings report and after being one of the best-performing stocks of 2017.

Some companies have seen their stocks rise to the point that they may now be priced for perfection. While investors overlook traditional value metrics because Amazon is such a growth engine that is taking over the country, we have to expect that Amazon shares have become priced for perfection. Analysts have raised ratings and targets extensively ahead of Amazon’s report, due on Thursday, February 1. It seems almost assured that Amazon will have to beat earnings expectations, talk up its 2018 guidance and talk about how aspects of tax reform and the broader economic climate are set to benefit the company in the years ahead.

Top 10 Value Stocks To Watch Right Now: Royal Gold Inc.(RGLD)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Reuben Gregg Brewer]

Although gold streaming is something of a niche in the precious metals market, the largest competitors have been in the business since the 1980s,while new entrants are showing up as well (including hedge funds, private equity, and pension funds). Most investors, however, should probably stick with the largest, easiest to trade, and longest-tenured companies for now. Here are the top five.

    Company Market Cap Dividend Yield

    Franco-Nevada (NYSE:FNV) $13 billion 1.3%
    Wheaton Precious Metals (NYSE:WPM) $9 billion 1.7%
    Royal Gold (NASDAQ:RGLD) $6 billion 1.2%
Osisko Gold Royalties Ltd. $1.6 billion 1.6%
Sandstorm Gold Ltd. $800 million N/A

    Franco-Nevada

The largest streaming company by market cap is Franco-Nevada. As noted above, it has investments in nearly 300 mines, 50 of which are producing. However, it has taken diversification further than its peers by investing in around 80 oil and natural gas assets (57 producing), following the same basic business model. It’s not as pure a play on metals, but if you are looking for diversification, that non-precious-metals exposure is an interesting addition to the mix. That said, gold provides roughly 70% of its revenue, with silver at 15%, and oil and gas at just 7% (the rest is, effectively, “other”), meaning that gold is still the big driver of performance here. The company has increased its dividend annually for 10 consecutive years.

  • [By Joseph Griffin]

Royal Gold (NASDAQ:RGLD) (TSE:RGL) – Equities research analysts at B. Riley increased their Q2 2019 earnings per share (EPS) estimates for Royal Gold in a research note issued on Tuesday, April 17th. B. Riley analyst L. Pipes now forecasts that the basic materials company will post earnings of $0.46 per share for the quarter, up from their previous estimate of $0.45. B. Riley also issued estimates for Royal Gold’s Q3 2019 earnings at $0.45 EPS, Q4 2019 earnings at $0.44 EPS and FY2020 earnings at $1.78 EPS.

  • [By Reuben Gregg Brewer]

Gold streaming company Franco-Nevada Corporation (NYSE:FNV) offers investors a unique way to gain exposure to precious metals, but when you compare it to peers Royal Gold, Inc. (NASDAQ:RGLD) and Wheaton Precious Metals Corp. (NYSE:WPM)it looks relatively expensive. That said, if you are looking to gold for diversification you might still find that Franco-Nevada Corporation stock is a buy.
