Top Value Stocks To Watch For 2019

(This idea was originally published on Razor’s Edge on June 10. Some elements have been updated)

I like Bed Bath & Beyond (NASDAQ:BBBY) shares here for an aggressive long position into their Q1 earnings report on June 27. Specifically, I recommend buying July 19 strike calls that cover this event. I think risk/reward here is very asymmetric, and I am looking to exploit that in this trade.

But before I get into my rationale, a little background on the name is required. There is a very good reason I call the stock Blood Bath and Beyond, and that’s because it’s been a complete disaster.

Investopedia defines ‘value trap’ as:

A value trap is a stock that appears to be cheap because the stock has been trading at low valuation metrics such as multiples of earnings, cash flow or book value for an extended time period.

This definition should reference the ticker BBBY. To fully grasp just how bad of a value trap this stock has been, you simply need to look at key financial metrics for the company after they have reported Q4 earnings over the past three years.

Best Safest Stocks To Buy Right Now

1. Blame the bonds: The normally boring bond market is causing serious drama on Wall Street.

An avalanche of selling sent the Dow and S&P 500 careening 5% lower last week, one of the stock market’s worst weeks since the 2008 financial crisis.

The culprit: Rapidly rising bond yields are alarming investors who got hooked on a decade of low interest rates.

So what’s going on here? And why the focus on the bond market?

Modern financial markets function on the belief that U.S. government debt is the safest investment on the planet.

Knowing how much they can earn from “risk-free” Treasury bonds allows investors to determine the cost of stocks and other riskier assets. Treasuries serve as the benchmark for all other forms of credit, from junk bonds to mortgages.

“The 10-year Treasury sets the price for every asset in the world,” said Brent Schutte, chief investment strategist at Northwestern Mutual.

That means the surge in the 10-year yield — from 2.4% earlier this year to about 2.8% now — has increased the cost of money generally.

Best Safest Stocks To Buy Right Now: Dillard's, Inc.(DDS)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Adam Levine-Weinberg]

On Monday, top department store stocks including Macy’s (NYSE:M), Kohl’s (NYSE:KSS), Dillard’s (NYSE:DDS), and J.C. Penney (NYSE:JCP) lost roughly 3% to 4%. The catalyst was a negative analyst report.

  • [By ]

Some reasons for my bearishness on retail stocks:

Higher Energy Prices. Oil prices have rallied dramatically and back to 2014 levels, rising from about $35 a barrel in early 2016 to around $67 Thursday. That’s bad news for U.S. retailers, as rising oil prices historically squeeze consumer disposable incomes. That’s one reason why I’ve been consistently raising my short exposure to retail and plan to continue doing so. Shaky Same-Store Sales Growth. Recent improvements to same-store sales at Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF) , Urban Outfitters (URBN) , Dillard’s (DDS) , Gap Inc. (GPS) and Macy’s (M) come against downgraded expectations, and might not be sustainable anyway. No Deal for Nordstrom (JWN) . The Nordstrom family has apparently abandoned plans to take its namesake company private. I had expressed concerns that this would happen. Higher Interest Rates. A rise in the London Inter-Bank Offered Rate (LIBOR) has recently accelerated. That’s bad news for retailers, as many variable-rate consumer debts (particularly mortgages) key off of the LIBOR. This will likely put a damper on mortgage refinancings — something that many see as an important ingredient for personal-consumption expenditures.

  • [By Adam Levine-Weinberg]

A day later, Macy’s smaller rival Dillard’s (NYSE:DDS) followed with its own solid earnings report. The better-than-expected results and a recent analyst upgrade have helped power a roughly 13% rally in Dillard’s stock over the past week.

  • [By Adam Levine-Weinberg]

Yet that big post-earnings plunge didn’t make Macy’s the worst-performing department store stock of the past week. Shares of J.C. Penney and Sears Holdings have plunged about 30% during the same period, after those companies reported bad news last week. Even regional department store chain Dillard’s (NYSE:DDS) — which, like Macy’s, posted better-than-expected Q2 results — has experienced a steep sell-off in the past few days.

  • [By Motley Fool Staff]

Like its larger peers Macy’s and Kohl’s, Dillard’s (NYSE:DDS) experienced a rebound in sales and earnings growth beginning in late 2017. Comps rose 3% in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2017 and 2% the next quarter.

Applied Optoelectronics (NASDAQ:AAOI) was upgraded by investment analysts at ValuEngine from a “sell” rating to a “hold” rating in a report issued on Saturday.

  • [By Nicholas Rossolillo]

Shares of fiber optic networking manufacturer Applied Optoelectronics (NASDAQ:AAOI) fell as much as 25% in late August through early September on tariff worries. Comments from the White House that taxes could be imposed on virtually all goods imported into the U.S. from China sent investors scurrying for the exits, and Wall Street analyst downgrades of some of AOI’s peers didn’t help either. Since the company has operations in China, it could be argued that the political concerns are valid. However, AOI is in good shape, and after another stock price adjustment, shares look like a value play again.

  • [By Anders Bylund]

Shares of Applied Optoelectronics (NASDAQ:AAOI) are on the rise today thanks to a bullish analyst note. The maker of optical networking components and modules saw its stock price jump as much as 14% higher, backing down to a 13.1% gain as of 2:50 p.m. EDT.

  • [By Logan Wallace]

Applied Optoelectronics (NASDAQ:AAOI) issued an update on its second quarter earnings guidance on Tuesday morning. The company provided earnings per share (EPS) guidance of $0.39-$0.52 for the period, compared to the Thomson Reuters consensus estimate of $0.46. The company issued revenue guidance of $75-$81 million, compared to the consensus revenue estimate of $77.48 million.

Top 5 Energy Stocks To Buy For 2019

Stocks opened higher on Thursday thanks to strong gains in the financial and energy sectors. Meanwhile, the technology sector felt pressure, with the tech-heavy Nasdaq index slipping into the red in early morning trading. Despite this trend, shares of Micron (MU ) added about 0.5% at the open on the back of a bullish analyst note.

Wall Street’s top analysts have not been shy about their praise for Micron in recent years, and today it was Goldman Sachs getting in on the action. The firm’s Mark Delaney said in a note Thursday that he is confident Micron is poised to top earnings estimates when it reports Q3 results later this month.

The earnings beat will be powered by strength from Micron’s DRAM segment, Delaney said. The analyst also argued that this strength will continue into the third quarter of the calendar year, which he said is “longer than some industry contacts that we had spoken with previously expected.”

Micron currently sports 23 buy ratings, six hold ratings, and zero sell ratings, according to Bloomberg. Its most recent rating prior to Goldman’s note came from analysts at Longbow Research, who re-initiated coverage on the chipmaker with a neutral designation.
