So what

The ups and downs of crude oil trading can often drive Clean Energy Fuels’ stock and that appears to be what’s happening today. WTI Crude Oil is trading 3.5% higher at $70.45 per barrel and Brent Crude is currently up 2.2% to $76.34 per barrel.

Apparently, investors are beginning to catch on to the fact that Tesla CEO Elon Musk has a severe case of a behavioral condition known as the planning fallacy. People who suffer from the planning fallacy are serial offenders when it comes to projects coming in over budget, late, and with fewer features than promised. The New York Times reported that Telsa’s main problematic issues pertain to a slower timetable than expected for the introduction of the Model 3, along with problems that relate to the manufacture of its battery packs.

Advisors’ Opinion:

Shares of Arch Coal Inc (NYSE:ARCH) are slumping today, down nearly 15% as of 1:04 p.m. EDT, after the company reported lackluster first-quarter results and a muted outlook for2018.

The stock market climbed sharply on Thursday, responding well to favorable earnings results from several corners of the market. Major benchmarks were up 1% to 2%, with particularly good performance from the Nasdaq Composite thanks to the tech sector’s outperformance during the day. Yet some stocks suffered from bad news that cast doubt on companies’ ability to benefit from generally favorable business conditions. MGM Resorts International (NYSE:MGM), Arch Coal (NYSE:ARCH), and LendingTree (NASDAQ:TREE) were among the worst performers on the day. Here’s why they did so poorly.

The ongoing trade rift between the United States and China continues to plague international markets. Despite reports that both countries are working behind the scenes to prevent additional detrimental trade policies, both countries recently proposed tens of billions in new tariffs on one another. The United States has accused China of widespread intellectual property theft, while China has accused the United States of unfair trade practices, including price manipulation in the agricultural industry. This morning, it’s worth noting that proposed tariffs on U.S. business jets will likely not provide a competitive advantage to foreign competition. Reuters reports that Chinese aviation executives do not see the layer of protectionism as a way to bolster the nation’s local market. Check back to Money Morning today for more insight on how the ongoing trade war could affect your investments.
Finally, investors will continue to monitor ongoing developments in Washington around the presidency of Donald Trump. The White House has asked a federal judge to block prosecutors from reviewing any files seized from his lawyer’s office during a raid by the FBI last week. The agency seized a trove of documents from lawyer Michael Cohen’s office as part of an investigation into a payment of hush money. The spat between the White House and the FBI continues a day after former FBI Director James Comey called Trump “morally unfit to be president.”

Still, reading between the lines, it’s been clear which names he has liked over the months and years. Lithium Americas (OTCQX:LACDF) and SQM (NYSE:SQM) are prime examples. Consider that LAC shares have more than doubled from an early July low of C$0.78 (it closed at C$1.70 on Sept. 15th) when rumblings suggested that SQM might not move forward on the LAC/SQM Cauchari-Olaroz project. When my friend Seth asked me to invest in his new wine store, the decision was easy…   He'd already answered the most important question you must ask before making an investment.   Most investors forget to ask this question. But as I'll explain today, if you know how to answer it, you'll set yourself apart from the crowd…   I got to know Seth while I was in medical school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and he was the wine buyer for a local grocery store… He was educated as a chef and was working on his Master Sommelier badge. (A "sommelier" or "wine steward" is the wine expert at high-end restaurants. You must pass an exam to throw around the snooty French title, and "master" is the highest level of certification.)   Seth always gave great suggestions for meal and wine pairings and would remember them months later… As a customer, I could tell he cared about me, listened, and gave great advice (a spectacular combination). So when he approached me about backing his shop… I knew he understood wine and had a passion for it.

Halma PLC (HLMA.LN) said Thursday that it expects adjusted pretax profit for fiscal 2018 to be in line with market expectations, but added that its first-half foreign-exchange benefits reversed in the second half.

The FTSE 100-listed safety, health and environmental technology group said adjusted pretax profit for the year ending March 31 is expected to be 212.3 million pounds ($298.6 million), according to a consensus market forecast. Current market expectations for Halma’s fiscal 2018 adjusted pretax profit range from GBP208.3 million to GBP218.1 million, the company added.

In the first half of fiscal 2018, Halma’s adjusted pretax profit was GBP94.5 million, up 13% on year.

The company said its order intake has remained ahead of revenue, and added that foreign-exchange is now expected to have a neutral impact for the full year, reversing the currency benefits it experienced in the first half. In November, the company’s order intake was ahead of revenue and ahead of the year-earlier figure.

best shares to invest now: MGIC Investment Corporation(MTG)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Monday was a positive day on Wall Street, as major benchmarks jumped following an uneventful weekend, tapering their gains as the session came to a close. Some had feared that China might retaliate once again after the U.S. issued a second round of tariffs against the nation with the world’s second-largest economy, but the expected fireworks didn’t come, putting market participants more at ease. The beginning of earnings season in the next week will also distract investors from geopolitical issues, perhaps allowing indexes to climb further. Yet some individual stocks had difficulties that sent their shares lower. Yandex (NASDAQ:YNDX), Menlo Therapeutics (NASDAQ:MNLO), and MGIC Investment (NYSE:MTG) were among the worst performers on the day. Here’s why they did so poorly.

  • [By Paul Ausick]

MGIC Investment Corp. (NYSE: MTG) traded down about 5.2% Tuesday to post a new 52-week low of $10.07 after closing Monday at $10.62. The stock’s 52-week high is $16.21. Volume was more than three times the daily average of around 3.6 million shares. The company had no specific news Tuesday. About half an hour before the closing bell the stock traded up about 2% for the day.

MGIC Investment Corp. (NYSE: MTG) traded down about 6.5% Wednesday to post a new 52-week low of $10.07 after closing Tuesday at $10.77. The stock’s 52-week high is $16.21. Volume was more than double the daily average of around 4.2 million shares. The company reported uninspiring first-quarter results this morning.

Top 5 Undervalued Stocks To Own Right Now

There are a number of great companies in the market today. By using the ModernGraham valuation model, I have selected the 10 lowest PEmg (price to normalized earnings) companies. Each company has been determined to be undervalued and suitable for the Defensive Investor according to the ModernGraham approach.

Defensive Investors are defined as investors who are not able or willing to do substantial research into individual investments, and therefore need to select only the companies that present the least amount of risk. Enterprising Investors, on the other hand, are able to do substantial research and can select companies that present a moderate (though still low) amount of risk.

Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. (NASDAQ:BBBY)

Bed Bath & Beyond qualifies for both the Defensive Investor and the Enterprising Investor. The Defensive Investor is only initially concerned with the poor dividend history. The Enterprising Investor is only concerned with the lack of dividends. As a result, all value investors should feel comfortable proceeding with the analysis.

Interpublic is our income play in our media universe. While other stocks we cover offer a higher yield than IPG’s 2.1%, the company’s double digit EPS growth projections for 2016 (following an estimated 18% in 2015) will also likely be a driver of outperformance for the year. While results can be somewhat volatile for IPG, we would point to record new business win backlog this year, which improves our conviction that the better than average recent organic revenue growth trends will continue next year. At 18x our 2016 EPS estimate, we find IPG shares attractive at current levels for another projected year of healthy double digit total returns.

  • [By Laurie Kulikowski]

Net operating cash flow has significantly increased by 59.42% to $280.90 million when compared to the same quarter last year. In addition, INTERPUBLIC GROUP OF COS has also vastly surpassed the industry average cash flow growth rate of 8.14%.

  • [By Paul Ausick]

The Interpublic Group of Companies Inc. (NYSE: IPG) dropped about 4% Wednesday to post a new 52-week low of $21.28 after closing Tuesday at $22.16. The 52-week high is $25.71. Volume reached nearly 10 million shares traded, more than double the daily average of around 3.8 million. Tuesday’s weak earnings report continued to weigh on the share price.

  • [By Laurie Kulikowski]

Current return on equity exceeded its ROE from the same quarter one year prior. This is a clear sign of strength within the company. Compared to other companies in the Media industry and the overall market, INTERPUBLIC GROUP OF COS’s return on equity significantly exceeds that of both the industry average and the S&P 500.
