ICICI Direct’s research report on Titan Company

Titan’s stock price has witnessed a correction of ~13% since our last result update in the backdrop of speculation on an increase in import duty on gold, with the aim of narrowing current account deficit (CAD). However, the central government maintained status quo on gold import duty but increased duties on imported jewellery to 20% from 15% and on cut & polished diamonds to 7.5% from 5%. The hike on these products is unlikely to impact Titan, as most articles that go into manufacturing jewellery are sourced from domestic markets. Moreover, in the past couple of years Titan has revamped its business model by enhancing the share of gold procurement through exchange programmes from ~15% in FY13 to 40% in FY18, thus reducing its dependency on imports. We believe its business model has the inherent strength that would enable it to capitalise on larger opportunities like wedding jewellery (increase contribution from 35% in FY18 to 50% by FY23) thereby providing impetus to revenue and profit growth. We expect revenues and earnings to grow at a CAGR of 20% and 28%, respectively, in FY18-20E.

Best Undervalued Stocks For 2018

The OPEC deal and two new pipelines to be built in Western Canada saw my favorite oil & gas stocks tick higher – much higher in some cases. And, this should be just the beginning!

As supply and demand come back into balance, Western Canadian producers should find prices sufficient to fund growth without adding to debt. At the same time, the Trans Mountain pipeline will provide access to tidewater and the upgraded Enbridge line will provide a bit more capacity, both of which should act to shrink the differential between Alberta prices and West Texas Intermediate, currently somewhere in the low-to-mid teens. Both projects are expected to be complete by 2019, easing major transportation bottlenecks.

A run-down of today’s action shows the leverage on the day of the announcement:

Penn West (NYSE:PWE) gained $0.17 per share or 10.8%

Pengrowth (NYSE:PGH) added $0.23 or 17.8%

Enerplus (NYSE:ERF) tacked on $1.29 or 17.5%

All three of these names remain undervalued in my opinion. All three have -made significant progress in de-levering their balance sheets (although PGH still has a way to go to be out of the woods entirely). All three expect to fund their capital outlays through internally generated cash flows and still reduce debt even further.

Clearly, investors should be at least looking at stocks in this industry, so we asked three of our investing contributors to each highlight a great company in the industry to help you get started. • [By Tyler Crowe]

I don’t know if you have noticed, but oil prices have been on the rise lately, which has done miraculous things for the bottom lines at oil and gas companies. The same can be said for Suncor Energy (NYSE:SU), which was able to post a rather healthy earnings per share number considering one of its major oil sands facilities was shut down in the most recent quarter.

The Michaels Companies (Nasdaq: MIK) owns six brands in the retail arts & crafts space, including the top specialty retailer in North America and the #1 wholesale distributor by market share. A similar plant will be open in the UAE in the next few years.

Even in the Middle East, home to some of the world&a;rsquo;s largest oil and gas producers, the clean energy revolution is coming.

Thanks to its fast-growing population and rapid economic growth, its demand for energy is set to grow by 3.5 % a year over the next two decades, according to a new report from Siemens, the German conglomerate, and Masdar, the UAE clean energy developer.

Its energy demand is set to grow by 277GW by 2035, to 483GW. A fifth of that will be renewable, up from just over 5% now. An extra 61GW of solar power is expected to be installed over that period, with a conservative estimate of 27GW of wind, says the report, Middle East Power Outlook 2035, which was released at the start of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week.

Top Clean Energy Stocks To Buy For 2018: First Harvest Corp., Prior to Reverse Merger with Cannavoices, Inc. (HVST)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Javier Hasse]

First Harvest Corp (OTC: HVST), acquired Cannavoices, Inc., a developer of cannabis-focused mobile games and social media platforms.

"A trend we've seen developing slowly but steadily [is one] wherenew channels are being developed to reach cannabis consumers, primarily due to limits in advertising. There is so much regulation in the space that, in such an entrepreneurial environment where there are really no incumbent leaders, people are trying to be creative and figuring out ways to reach the cannabis consumer, both as an undeserved demographic and, just one that has still got that taboo around it, [leading] to larger players not necessarily getting involved yet." "Basically, they are trying to figure out ways to reach the consumer without direct TV advertising and stuff like that.”

Top Clean Energy Stocks To Buy For 2018: The Michaels Companies, Inc.(MIK)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Chris Lange]

Michaels Companies Inc. (NASDAQ: MIK) reported its fiscal third-quarter financial results before the markets opened on Thursday. The company said that it had $0.44 in earnings per share (EPS) and $1.24 billion in revenue. The consensus estimates from Thomson Reuters had called for $0.43 in EPS and revenue of $1.26 billion. The same period of last year reportedly had EPS of $0.40 and $1.23 billion in revenue.

  • [By Jim Cramer]

After a year of stock price fluctuations, the net result is that MIK’s price has not changed very much. Although its weak earnings growth may have played a role in this flat result, don’t lose sight of the fact that the performance of the overall market, as measured by the S&P 500 Index, was essentially similar. Turning toward the future, the fact that the stock has come down in price over the past year should not necessarily be interpreted as a negative; it could be one of the factors that may help make the stock attractive down the road. Right now, however, we believe that it is too soon to buy.

42.37% is the gross profit margin for MICHAELS COS INC which we consider to be strong. Regardless of MIK’s high profit margin, it has managed to decrease from the same period last year. Despite the mixed results of the gross profit margin, the net profit margin of 6.57% trails the industry average.

MICHAELS COS INC has improved earnings per share by 19.4% in the most recent quarter compared to the same quarter a year ago. This year, the market expects an improvement in earnings ($1.70 versus $1.04).

  • [By Laurie Kulikowski]

We rate MICHAELS COS INC as a Sell with a ratings score of D+. This is driven by some concerns, which we believe should have a greater impact than any strengths, and could make it more difficult for investors to achieve positive results compared to most of the stocks we cover. Among the areas we feel are negative, one of the most important has been weak operating cash flow.

Top Clean Energy Stocks To Buy For 2018: Franco-Nevada Corporation(FNV)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Reuben Gregg Brewer]

Gold streaming company Franco-Nevada Corporation (NYSE:FNV) offers investors a unique way to gain exposure to precious metals, but when you compare it to peers Royal Gold, Inc. (NASDAQ:RGLD) and Wheaton Precious Metals Corp. (NYSE:WPM)it looks relatively expensive. That said, if you are looking to gold for diversification you might still find that Franco-Nevada Corporation stock is a buy.

Hot Clean Energy Stocks To Watch Right Now

Ive been right about Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) thus far.

There seem to be only two schools on Tesla. You either love the carmaker, or you hate it with a passion. I fall into the latter category, not because I’m anti clean energy, or opposed to new entries to the auto industry, but because of the grandiose and inefficient management history the company has had under Elon Musk. Ive written often about the competition and general cutthroat nature of the auto industry that Tesla faces. Ive been waiting for some time to see signs of Teslas inability to ramp up car production in a way that justifies its wild stock valuation. And boy howdy have I taken some flak in the comments section.

This week has given me some vindication on my feelings about Tesla. The stock is down on rough news of production complications, and a fading faith in Elon Musks rhetoric, something I said would happen. The valuation is not justified, and cannot be justified when youre selling such a small amount of cars and not turning any profit. I get it that this stock performance is about future potential earnings, but the company is not putting together concrete evidence that it is working toward those types of numbers.

Hot Clean Energy Stocks To Watch Right Now: The Michaels Companies, Inc.(MIK)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Laurie Kulikowski]

We rate MICHAELS COS INC as a Sell with a ratings score of D+. This is driven by some concerns, which we believe should have a greater impact than any strengths, and could make it more difficult for investors to achieve positive results compared to most of the stocks we cover. Among the areas we feel are negative, one of the most important has been weak operating cash flow.

  • [By JPMorgan]

MIK’s results over the past year point to the company’s success in improving merchandising, marketing, and in-store execution plus the benefits of having a functioning e-commerce website. We believe part of the challenge for the bears is both a lack of appreciation for the category as well as missing the historical context of how leadership has evolved. Indeed, the difference in focus on "the front end" under CEO Chuck Rubin (who arrived in 2013) vs. a more process-oriented and margin-focused CEO prior to his arrival left a lot of impactful, low hanging fruit opportunities. Finally, while we acknowledge that longer term the sustainable comp is lower than the recent ~4% underlying trend, we point to the low volatility of sales, high cash generative nature of the business, barriers to entry (e.g., high SKU density, low inventory turns, lack of brands), and MIK’s market leadership as reasons why the multiple has the potential to expand over time (a la AZO). Balance sheet de-levering should also make the PE look increasingly cheap over time and transfer cash/value to equity holders.

The Economy Isn't As Strong As You Think

The U.S. economy seems to be humming along, with 2017 growth touching 2.3%, well above the 1.5% in the year before. The Bureau of Economic Analysis upgraded its estimate for fourth quarter growth to 2.9% from the advance estimate of 2.6% in January.

The picture on the earnings front is just as rosy. Companies in the S&P 500 reported growth of 11.7% in earnings last year and analysts see that number growing by 18.4% in 2018, according to FactSet Research.

While market volatility has jumped lately on fears of a trade war, solid economic growth, and hope that the tax cuts will drive earnings have supported stocks near highs.

But it seems investors may be looking at the wrong metrics.

Against good numbers at the broadest level, a recent release points to a new front of economic weakness lurking just under the surface.

This factor has an overwhelming effect on the economy and could soon turn investor sentiment. Looking deeper into the data may show the only place for safety in what could become the end of the bull market.

Are Retail Sales Hiding A Disturbing Trend?
Retail sales in the United States fell for the third consecutive month in February, even as consumer confidence hit a 17-year high. According to the Commerce Department, February retail sales fell 0.1% from the previous month, marking the first three-month slide since April 2012.

Weak retail sales could be a big problem for the economy considering 70% of GDP is driven by consumer spending. The Atlanta Fed downgraded its estimate of Q1 GDP growth to 2.3% on April 5, a half-percent reduction from its previous estimate. Contribution from consumer spending in the quarter is seen as 1.3% now versus 1.6% previously, the largest drop among contributing factors.

The picture is not uniformly bleak within retail sales and a trend is developing when you look deeper into the numbers.

Looking at the three-month data, it seems consumers are spending freely on small, impulse items while holding back on the bigger purchases. This could be showing some hesitancy on the part of consumers that other economic data isn’t showing.

In the big-ticket items, notably in Auto and Home Furnishings, there’s a significant change in the year-over-year growth and the more recent growth.

Sales for companies with more expensive products could be about to get worse as inflation shows signs of creeping higher. Higher prices might not be as obvious to consumers in those smaller items but could easily show through in larger-ticket purchases. The result could be fewer sales or lower profit for companies that aren’t able to pass inflation through to the customer.

Rebalancing Your Portfolio For The New Consumer
Among the biggest losers in the retail sales trend have been autos, furniture, and department stores. Rising rates and any broader economic weakness will weigh on car sales and home purchases. Department stores have been facing double jeopardy on the trend away from luxury shopping and an ever-larger slice of spending going online.

Avoiding the worst of this new trend in retail sales could mean rebalancing to companies in that lower-price component of consumer spending. If an economic slowdown were to hit, these smaller-ticket companies may also be relatively safer as consumers cut back further on big purchases.

McDonald’s (NYSE: MCD) may be the epitome of this lower-ticket, impulse spending trend, with its dollar menu and 14,000 U.S. locations. Improvements in technology and service helped the company drive a massive 11% increase in operating profitability last year. A refranchising program and benefits from tax reform should help to continue this success.

Shares pay a 2.6% yield and trade for 24.3 times trailing earnings. That valuation is higher than the 21.7 times average multiple over the last five years, but earnings are expected to jump 14% over the next four quarters to $7.59 per share.

The Michaels Companies (Nasdaq: MIK) owns six brands in the retail arts & crafts space, including the top specialty retailer in North America and the #1 wholesale distributor by market share. The arts & crafts segment should hold up well in any kind of consumer weakness as people look to save money by staying in and spending on inexpensive crafts.

The company is aggressively developing its online presence with three websites for different brands and free shipping on orders of $39 or more. The sites grew traffic from 130 million visitors in 2015 to 250 million in 2016 and continue to account for a larger portion of sales.

Shares trade for just 8.8 times sales, nearly half the average multiple of 16 times over the four years since the public offering. Earnings are expected to grow 5.5% to $2.32 per share this year.

Molson Coors Brewing (NYSE: TAP) is the leading brewer globally with 25% of the U.S. market, a 33% share in Canada and a fifth of the European market. The company acquired the remaining 50% stake in MillerCoors from SABMiller in 2016, giving it greater scale and international distribution.

Competition and shifting consumer tastes to craft beers has weakened volumes, but the company has expanded into the space and now has the largest brands in the United States, Canada, Ireland and Spain by market share.

Benefits from the acquisition of MillerCoors are just recently coming through to financials. While net sales only grew 1.7% in the year to Q2, the company was able to grow earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) by 5.5% over the period. Free cash flow has tripled compared to the first half of 2016.

Shares pay a 2.2% yield and trade for 16.7 times earnings versus an average of 25.9 times over the last five years. Earnings are expected to increase 18% to $5.38 per share over the next four quarters.

Risks To Consider: While macro factors like retail sales point to support in shares of companies in smaller-ticket items, watch out for stretched valuations in many names after nearly a decade in rising share prices.

Action To Take: Follow consumers by investing in consumer discretionary companies that make their money on smaller-ticket products rather than larger purchases.

Editor’s Note: With reports of deteriorating production, performance, and revenue… this high-profile CEO is ditching his auto empire. Now he’s set his sights on an even more lucrative business. And if you jump in at the ground level of this opportunity you can ride it upward to sky-high profits. Grab a piece of this $1.3 trillion industry in the making today.
