Best Oil Stocks For 2019

What happened

Shares of oil shipper Nordic American Tankers Limited (NYSE:NAT) shot up by double digits in Monday trading, and currently occupy a berth up 13.4% as of 12:55 p.m. EDT.

The catalyst for the move: This morning, management published an open letter to its “shareholders and investors,” reassuring that its “financial position … has changed much to the better” over the last nine months.

Nordic American Tankers still has a long way to go to reach profitability. Image source: Getty Images.

So what

The company is seeing “improvement in the tanker market” today — enough that it no longer sees a need to raise additional debt. What’s more, management says it expects to “immediately reap the benefits of an upswing in the tanker market,” which sounds propitious for the company’s upcoming earnings report, probably due out in August.

Longer term, Nordic American still expects “to retain its expansionary business model that has been rewarding over many years,” but for the time being, it will not be adding to its debt load with a bond offering.

Best Oil Stocks For 2019: Marathon Oil Corporation(MRO)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Thursday was a volatile day on Wall Street, as major stock indexes lost a lot of ground early in the day but then rebounded to finished mixed. Gains for the Nasdaq Composite came even as Dow Jones Industrial Average fell modestly, and although investors spent much of the session trying to parse through the implications of the latest economic report on retail sales, earnings played a key role in moving many well-known stocks. Marathon Oil (NYSE:MRO), AstraZeneca (NYSE:AZN), and Bloomin’ Brands (NASDAQ:BLMN) were among the top performers. Here’s why they did so well.

Best Oil Stocks For 2019: Magellan Midstream Partners L.P.(MMP)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Over the past five years, Magellan Midstream Partners (NYSE:MMP) has generated a total return of nearly 70%. That’s quite impressive considering that most master limited partnerships (MLPs) have lost value over that timeframe. One of the reasons the company has delivered such strong total returns is that it has steadily increased its payout even as rivals have either stopped raising their distribution, or cut it. Magellan has avoided this fate by investing within its means instead of stretching to grow at a faster pace.

Meanwhile, the return multiples for many of the projects under development by Magellan Midstream Partners (NYSE:MMP) are in the six- to eight-times EBITDA range. Because of that, the $1.7 billion of expansion projects Magellan currently has underway only will generate about $250 million in incidental EBITDA. That’s partially why Magellan Midstream expects to grow its payout at a slower pace of 8% this year and a 5% to 8% annual rate in 2019 and 2020, even though it plans on paying out the same percentage of its cash flow as ONEOK.

That means pipelines are equally busy carrying all that raw crude into these refineries and then carrying out gasoline, diesel and other finished products. So you’d think these would be boon times for Magellan Midstream Partners (NYSE: MMP), which owns 10,000 miles of pipeline that connect with 50% of the nation’s refinery capacity.

Speaking of debt, energy infrastructure MLPs tend to take on high levels of it to fund their large infrastructure development projects. That means taking on additional debt to fund a distribution isn’t always feasible. Luckily, in the case of Magellan and Enterprise, their conservative management teams have kept them at comparatively good debt ratings and low levels of debt relative to their peers:

Company Debt Rating Debt-to-EBITDA Ratio (TTM)  Debt-to-Adjusted-EBITDA Ratio (TTM)
    Magellan Midstream Partners (NYSE:MMP) BBB+/Baa1 3.5 3.3
    Enterprise Products Partners (NYSE:EPD) BBB+/Baa1 4.3 3.7
    Buckeye Partners BBB-/Baa3 5.0 4.3

Enbridge Inc. (NYSE:ENB) has a roughly 6% yield, while Magellan Midstream Partners, L.P. (NYSE:MMP) offers a slightly lower 5.5%. Before simply buying the higher-yielding midstream company, step back and consider the risks at each today. When you do that, the slightly lower yield at Magellan looks a lot more enticing. Here’s what you need to know to decide which is the better buy: Enbridge or Magellan.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Magellan Midstream Partners (NYSE:MMP) has been a great dividend growth stock since its public debut in 2001. Overall, the master limited partnership (MLP) has increased its payout 65 times, growing it at a 12% compound annual rate. The company’s ability to steadily increase the income stream it pays out has created significant value for investors. Since its IPO, Magellan has generated a total return of more than 3,000%, compared to a slightly more than 200% total return from the S&P 500 over that timeframe.

Oil and gas investors have been through the wringer over the past few years. Even the most stable investments in this industry — pipelines, processing, and logistics — haven’t been spared. Case in point: Shares of Magellan Midstream Partners (NYSE:MMP) have declined 18% over the past three years despite the company posting consistent revenue and cash flow growth. To top it off, there has been a slew of regulatory and tax changes in recent months that will have a significant impact on this particular industry.

Investing when you are young is generally focused on growing your nest egg. And as you near retirement, that starts to change to a goal of living off your savings. Doing that can be a lot easier if you focus on dividend-paying companies backed by stable businesses. Here are three high-yield stocks that fit that bill: Magellan Midstream Partners LP (NYSE:MMP), Duke Energy Corporation (NYSE:DUK), and Procter & Gamble (NYSE:PG).

Companies in this region have had more measured growth plans because of the lack of pipelines. As Miller mentioned, though, improved efficiency has resulted in most companies outpacing their production growth plans. The lack of takeaway capacity has led to much lower prices for in-basin production. Range Resources (NYSE:RRC), one of the larger producers in the region, has noted that its price realizations were 10% below benchmark prices because of a lack of takeaway capacity.

Hot Oil Stocks To Buy Right Now: Williams Partners L.P.(WPZ)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Natural gas pipeline giant Williams Companies (NYSE:WMB) and its MLP Williams Partners (NYSE:WPZ) reported mixed second-quarter results after the close Wednesday. Earnings declined fractionally due to asset sales and some higher costs. Cash flow, on the other hand, moved slightly higher thanks in part to lower interest expenses as a result of  debt reduction. However, while both numbers underwhelmed in Q2, they should head much higher in the coming year because Williams has several expansion projects under way that should boost its bottom line.

  • [By Reuben Gregg Brewer]

There’s an interesting dichotomy here, however. Crestwood was looking to stay financially disciplined, but it also needed to invest to grow. Doing both at the same time is difficult, which is why it partnered up with Con Ed in the Marcellus region, Shell Midstream Partners LP (NYSE:SHLX) and First Reserve in the Delaware Basin, and Williams Partners (NYSE:WPZ) in the Powder River basin. These agreements allow Crestwood to keep expanding its business without having to foot the entire bill for the investments.

Hot Oil Stocks To Buy Right Now: ConocoPhillips(COP)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Chris Lange]

The number of ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP) shares short dropped to 18.27 million from the previous level of 21.33 million. Shares were trading at $70.01 within a 52-week range of $42.27 to $71.71.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

One of the most notable has been ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP), which first started buying back its stock in late 2016. The oil giant announced a $3 billion buyback in November of that year, which it planned to finance with asset sales. ConocoPhillips would go on to sell more than double the amount of assets it initially expected, which enabled the company to complete that authorization by the end of 2017. Meanwhile, it’s working to buy back another $3 billion in stock this year as part of a $15 billion program through 2020 that could also see the company retire 20% of its outstanding stock depending on its purchase prices. However, with shares of ConocoPhillips up 64% since announcing the plan — versus an 8% decline for Devon Energy — it’s not going to get as much bang for its buyback buck going forward.

  • [By Chris Lange]

The number of ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP) shares short dropped to 17.34 million from the previous level of 18.27 million. Shares were trading at $68.71, within a 52-week range of $42.27 to $71.71.

Top Oil Stocks For 2019

One of the largest drillers in Canada, Calgary-based Ensign Energy Services Inc (TSE: ESI) reported Q2 earnings on Tuesday and these results give a very good insight as to where the Canadian and US oil and oilfield industries stand and where they are heading. Revenue rose 13% to $263.1 million and the net loss was $36.7 million versus a net loss of $33.8 million for the second quarter of 2017 (note that the year-over-year weakening of the US dollar against the Canadian dollar negatively impacted United States and international financial results when translated into Canadian dollars).

However, it gets more interesting when digging deeper into Ensign Energy Services’ earnings:

Canada revenue was $45.5 million (17% of total revenue); United States revenue was $148.1 million (56% of total revenue); and International revenue was $69.5 million (27% of total revenue). Canadian drilling recorded 830 operating days in Q2 2018, a 27% decrease from 1,141 operating days in Q2 2017. Canadian well servicing recorded 13,359 operating hours in Q2 2018, a 13% decrease from 15,291 operating hours in Q2 2017. United States drilling recorded 3,228 operating days in Q2 2018, a 25% increase from 2,590 operating days in Q2 2017. United States well servicing recorded 28,722 operating hours in Q2 2018, a 33% increase from 21,594 operating hours in Q2 2017. International drilling recorded 1,425 operating days in Q2 2018, a 5% decrease from 1,506 operating days recorded in Q2 2017. Operating days were higher in the United States in Q2 2018 when compared to Q2 2017 due to increased demand in oilfield services caused by a price recovery of crude oil and natural gas commodity prices. Operating days were lower in Canada and internationally in Q2 2018 when compared to Q2 2017 mainly due to geopolitical factors and the lack of access for oil and natural gas to markets.

For outlook, the Ensign Energy Services’ earnings report noted tightness aided by countries like Venezuela and Libya having export issues, as well as new sanctions on Iranian oil set to begin in November of 2018. The increase in oil prices will help to continue the strengthening of customer balances sheets and cash flow and this should contribute to increased demand for oilfield services into the future.

Many of its peers slashed or eliminated their dividends to preserve cash. Former dividend stalwarts ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) and Anadarko Petroleum (NYSE:APC) were among the many that caved under the pressure of lower oil prices, with ConocoPhillips slicing its payout by two-thirds, while Anadarko slashed its dividend by 82%.

Top Oil Stocks For 2019: Williams Partners L.P.(WPZ)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

The stock market stayed in a pretty narrow range on Thursday, climbing early in the session but then slowly drifting lower through the afternoon hours. In the absence of major news, investors largely looked forward to key events like trade negotiations among the world’s largest economies. Other financial markets saw mixed moves as well, with 10-year Treasury yields climbing above 3.1% while oil prices stayed comfortably above $70 per barrel. Despite the quiet day, some companies had good news that pushed their shares sharply higher. World Wrestling Entertainment (NYSE:WWE), Chesapeake Energy (NYSE:CHK), and Williams Partners (NYSE:WPZ) were among the best performers on the day. Below, we’ll look more closely at these stocks to tell you why they did so well.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Natural gas pipeline giant Williams Companies (NYSE:WMB) announced today that it agreed to acquire the rest of its master limited partnership (MLP) Williams Partners (NYSE:WPZ) that it didn’t already own in a $10.5 billion deal. Not to be outdone, Canadian energy infrastructure giant Enbridge (NYSE:ENB) made an offer to acquire its namesake MLP Enbridge Energy Partners (NYSE:EEP), along with the rest of its publicly traded entities, including Spectra Energy Partners (NYSE:SEP). These transactions have big implications not only for investors in these entities but for those who own other pipeline companies, too.

Top Oil Stocks For 2019: Transocean Inc.(RIG)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

The stock market lost ground on Monday, although the declines in some major benchmarks were more extreme than others. A budding financial crisis in Turkey once again captured the attention of investors, as the threat of rising tariffs and escalating diplomatic tension could drive a wedge through the North Atlantic Treaty Organization at a critical time for the geopolitical environment in the region. The repercussions of recent events involving Turkey echoed around the world, and some companies felt the tremors more sharply than others. First Majestic Silver (NYSE:AG), Turkcell Iletisim Hizmetleri (NYSE:TKC), and Transocean (NYSE:RIG) were among the worst performers on the day. Here’s why they did so poorly.

Unless it’s not. Which it may not be. There’s a big cloud of uncertainty hanging over the company, in part thanks to its status as a very small fish in a very big deepwater ocean that’s full of huge, hungry competitors like Transocean (NYSE:RIG) and Ensco (NYSE:ESV). Questions also abound about its parent company, Seadrill (NYSE:SDRL).

Several high-yielding dividend stocks have taken it on the chin this year due to a sell-off in the stock market and rising interest rates. That one-two punch has hit pipeline stocks the hardest, with several top-notch companies tumbling by a double-digit percentage since the start of the year. Three that stand out as excellent options to consider buying now that they’re on sale are Magellan Midstream Partners (NYSE:MMP), Antero Midstream Partners (NYSE:AM), and Enbridge (NYSE:ENB).

  • [By Shane Hupp]

Fayez Sarofim & Co boosted its stake in Magellan Midstream Partners, L.P. (NYSE:MMP) by 14.0% in the 1st quarter, according to its most recent filing with the SEC. The fund owned 13,372 shares of the pipeline company’s stock after purchasing an additional 1,644 shares during the period. Fayez Sarofim & Co’s holdings in Magellan Midstream Partners were worth $780,000 at the end of the most recent quarter.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

This process starts with gathering pipelines, which transports a well’s production to central processing locations that separate oil, natural gas, natural gas liquids (NGLs), and water. The oil then moves by truck, pipeline, or tanker to storage facilities while it waits to go through a refinery or petrochemical complex and get turned into fuel, chemicals, or another oil-based product. While oil companies tend to own some of these midstream assets, especially gathering lines and processing facilities, third parties hold a significant portion of the energy infrastructure in North America. These companies often charge fees for the logistical services provided to oil companies. Master limited partnerships (MLPs) are a noteworthy owner of these assets in the U.S. and most commonly found in the energy midstream sector. MLPs are tax-advantaged entities that pass through most of their income to investors. The largest MLP by enterprise value is Enterprise Products Partners (NYSE:EPD), while other notable ones include Magellan Midstream Partners (NYSE:MMP) and MPLX (NYSE:MPLX).

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

In addition to those pipelines already under construction, companies continue to pitch new projects to shippers in hopes of locking in the next wave of growth. The latest entry into this building boom is the proposed Permian Gulf Coast pipeline, which is a joint venture between Energy Transfer Partners (NYSE:ETP), Magellan Midstream Partners (NYSE:MMP), MPLX (NYSE:MPLX), and Delek US Holdings (NYSE:DK). The line could be in service as soon as mid-2020 if everything goes according to plan.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

The company is also looking at a variety of oil pipeline expansion projects in the Permian Basin, including building the Permian Express-4 pipeline, which could move about 100,000 BPD. On top of that, it’s working on a potentially larger project with its joint venture partner Magellan Midstream Partners (NYSE:MMP). Long noted that the company had made “significant progress with our new 30-inch crude oil pipeline joint-venture project with Magellan and other strategic partners” that would “provide unprecedented flexibility from the Permian Basin.”

Top 10 Oil Stocks For 2019: Magellan Midstream Partners L.P.(MMP)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Reuben Gregg Brewer]

To put a number on its distribution growth, Phillips 66 Partners has increased its disbursement for 16 consecutive quarters (every quarter since its IPO) at a compound annual growth rate of 31%. That’s roughly the target it laid out for its first five years as a public entity. That is, of course, off of a low starting base. The year-over-year increase in the first-quarter distribution was around 20% — still a very impressive number when peers like Enterprise and Magellan Midstream Partners (NYSE:MMP) are offering up mid-to-high single-digit increases. (Kinder Morgan’s dividend growth will be huge in the coming years, but that’s a function of increasing the dividend after a painful cut.)

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Meanwhile, Valero Energy is investing in new midstream infrastructure that it could eventually drop down to its MLP, including those under construction in two joint ventures it formed with Magellan Midstream Partners (NYSE:MMP) last year. The first one will invest $380 million in building new refined products pipelines and storage assets in central Texas, which should start service by the middle of next year. Meanwhile, Valero and Magellan Midstream are also building a new marine terminal near Houston. Valero will pour $410 million into the terminal, which should start up in early 2020. Magellan sees the potential to invest another $700 million to double the terminal’s size in the future, which is a project that it could partner with Valero.

  • [By John Bromels]

    Energy Transfer Partners BBB-/Baa3 5.2 N/A

Data sources: Company presentations and YCharts. TTM = trailing 12 months.

  • [By John Bromels]

While 6,000 miles sounds like alot, it’s not that much in the grand scheme of things. Fellow MLP Magellan Midstream Partners (NYSE:MMP), for example, operates 10,800 miles of pipelines and 80 terminals. Buckeye’s pipelines are exclusively located in the Northeast and upper Midwest, primarily between St. Louis and New York City, with a large footprint around Chicago. Its terminals and storage facilities, though, sprawl across the country and the globe, with marine terminals on the Gulf Coast and in Western Europe, the Caribbean, and even Singapore.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Another wave of pipelines is already underway for 2020 and beyond. A joint venture between Energy Transfer Partners (NYSE:ETP), Magellan Midstream Partners (NYSE:MMP), and two other companies recently approved the construction of the Permian Gulf Coast pipeline. The 600-mile line should be operational by the middle of 2020 and transport crude to Energy Transfer’s Nederland terminal as well as Magellan’s East Houston terminal. Meanwhile, Plains All American Pipeline and oil giant ExxonMobil (NYSE:XOM) are teaming up on a joint venture to build a new oil pipeline in the Permian. The partners are planning a more-than-1 million-BPD pipeline that would ship oil produced by Exxon and others to the coast. The project is part of Exxon’s long-range planning to ensure that nothing derails its ambitious strategy to grow its Permian output fivefold by 2025.

Top 10 Oil Stocks For 2019: ConocoPhillips(COP)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

According to a recent report by Reuters, ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) has held talks with investment banks about helping the company unload its stake in Cenovus Energy (NYSE:CVE). That sale could net the oil giant more than $2 billion in cash, which would bolster its already sizable cash war chest and give it more money to allocate in creating value for investors.

  • [By John Bromels]

Oil prices are at their highest levels in three years, and that means that oil companies — both producers like ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) and integrated majors like BP (NYSE:BP) — are rolling in the dough right now, in part because of cost-cutting during the price downturn.

  • [By Reuben Gregg Brewer]

ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) and ExxonMobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM) are both large, international oil and natural gas producers. While they share many attributes, there are a couple of key differences. And those differences are what makes one appropriate for conservative investors and the other for more aggressive investors. Here’s what you need to know about these two energy stocks to decide which one is right for you.

Top 10 Oil Stocks For 2019: Apache Corporation(APA)

Apache Corporation (NYSE: APA) is raised to Buy from Hold at Argus with a $56 price target. That competes with the Wall Street consensus target of $46.19. The 52-week trading range for the company is $33.60 to $51.21. The stock closed Friday at $42.24.

Since oil prices peaked in 2014, both Total and Shell have managed to generate positive total returns for investors who held through the downturn, in large part because of their diverse operations. Neither has come close to outperforming the S&P 500, but it could have been far worse; one only has to look at some of the biggest independent oil producers, including Apache Corporation (NYSE:APA) (down 53%), Anadarko Petroleum Corporation (NYSE:APC) (down 33%), and Continental Resources, Inc. (NYSE:CLR) (down 12.3%) to appreciate the benefit of Total’s and Shell’s more diversified operations.

  • [By VantagePoint]

Apache Corporation (NYSE: APA) has been ripping since March 2nd, when it hit a two-year low of $33.60. Since then it's up 25 percent.

The three-month chart below shows that this trend is likely to continue. The blue line is generated via VantagePoint's intermarket analysis, and represents a prediction of what APA's moving average will be in three days. The black line is a simple 10-day moving average. Note the bullish crossover that occurred in early March. That was a signal that the stock was entering an uptrend.

There’s an interesting dichotomy here, however. Crestwood was looking to stay financially disciplined, but it also needed to invest to grow. Top 10 Oil Stocks For 2019

U.S. equities mostly finished lower on Wednesday as a breakdown in crude oil weighed on equities — resulting in the longest selloff since the election.

In the end, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.3%, the S&P 500 lost 0.2%, the Nasdaq Composite gained a fraction and the Russell 2000 lost 0.6%. Treasury bonds were weaker again, the dollar was stronger, gold lost 0.6% and oil was hit hard on a large U.S. inventory build pushing West Texas Intermediate down 5.4% to fresh lows for the year.

The crude carnage boosted the ProShares Ultra Short Crude (NYSEARCA:SCO) 10.4% for Edge subscribers as the United States Oil Fund LP (ETF) (NYSEARCA:USO) fell below its 200-day moving average for the first time since late November to end a four-month trading range. This also represents another failed breakout attempt for energy prices near the $55-a-barrel level.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Today, however, many drillers are setting a high bar for new wells. EOG Resources (NYSE:EOG) has been one of the leaders in disrupting the former way of thinking by establishing a high return hurdle rate for new wells of 30% after-tax at $40 oil. Others followed with similar return-focused approaches, including Encana (NYSE:ECA), which needs locations to achieve a 35% after-tax return at $50 oil to meet its premium hurdle rate.

Matt DiLallo (Williams Companies): This natural gas pipeline giant has had a slow start in 2018. Through the first half of the year, cash flow at the company’s MLP Williams Partners (NYSE:WPZ) has only increased by about 2%, due mainly to recent asset sales. However, with a major expansion project coming on line, cash flow growth should accelerate in the second half of the year. That project and others in the pipeline have the company on track to grow cash flow 9% in 2018 and another 13% next year.

Top 10 Oil Stocks For 2019: Apache Corporation(APA)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By John Bromels]

Three companies that the market has walloped are Apache Corporation (NYSE:APA), Magellan Midstream Partners (NYSE:MMP), and General Motors (NYSE:GM). Here’s why these stocks look like bargains, and why today might be a good time to scoop up some shares.

  • [By Jason Hall, John Bromels, and Daniel Miller]

To help you find the best values — not just cheap stocks — three Motley Fool investors did some legwork and uncovered three stocks that have some surprisingly attractive value properties: Starbucks Corporation (NASDAQ:SBUX), Apache Corporation (NYSE:APA), and Winnebago Industries Inc. (NYSE:WGO).

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Apache Corporation (NYSE:APA) stunned the oil and gas world in late 2016 by announcing the discovery of the Alpine High play in a long-overlooked spot of the Permian Basin. The company believed that it had uncovered more than 3 billion barrels of oil and even more natural gas, which would drive growth for years to come. However, that growth wouldn’t materialize overnight because Apache first had to build out the infrastructure needed to develop the field from scratch.

Top 10 Oil Stocks For 2019: ConocoPhillips(COP)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By The Ticker Tape]

TD Ameritrade clients appeared to take some profits in multiple names during the period. Oil companies were popular sells with ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP), BP  PLC (ADR) (NYSE: BP), National-Oilwell Varco Inc. (NYSE: NOV), and Transocean LTD (NYSE: RIG) all net sold. Oil prices traded near three-year highs on higher global demand and possible OPEC-led production cuts. COP and BP both traded at multi-year highs, while NOV and RIG reached 52-week highs, enticing clients to take profits in all four names. Alcoa Corp. (NYSE: AA) traded at levels not seen since before the financial crisis following proposed tariffs on steel and aluminum, and was net sold. For the third month in a row, Facebook, Inc. (NASDAQ: FB) was net sold after CEO Mark Zuckerberg testified before Congress regarding the misuse of user data and a beat on earnings.

  • [By Zacks]

Moreover, BP opened 100 retail sites in the country in 2017 and plans to open 1,400 more by 2021. The largest publicly traded oil company, ExxonMobil Corporation (NYSE: XOM) opened its gas stations in Mexico in December, while one of the world's biggest independent oil producers – ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP) – showed interest in Mexico, post-reform.

  • [By Max Byerly]

Intersect Capital LLC lowered its stake in ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) by 13.1% during the second quarter, according to its most recent Form 13F filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The institutional investor owned 8,221 shares of the energy producer’s stock after selling 1,237 shares during the period. Intersect Capital LLC’s holdings in ConocoPhillips were worth $572,000 at the end of the most recent quarter.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Last fall, ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) outlined its three-year operating plan, anticipating that it could increase production at a 5% compound annual growth rate assuming oil averaged $50 a barrel. While the return to a growth trajectory was nice to see, its forecast paled in comparison to rivals like EOG Resources (NYSE:EOG) and Anadarko Petroleum (NYSE:APC), which both project double-digit oil production growth rates over the next few years.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

As things stand right now, analysts anticipate that at least some Iranian oil will come off the market as a result of the sanctions. That lost output would further tighten an oil market that suddenly has little margin for error thanks to red-hot demand and tame supply growth. That’s the recipe for higher oil prices and could make top-tier U.S. oil stocks Anadarko Petroleum (NYSE:APC), Devon Energy (NYSE:DVN), and ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) big winners in the coming years.

  • [By Reuben Gregg Brewer]

Oil driller ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) is benefiting from rising oil prices and rewarding investors with dividend hikes. However, the company’s drilling-focused business hasn’t been able to sustain a high dividend in the past, cutting the payment in 2016 amid low oil prices. This suggests that dividend investors will end up disappointed if highly volatile oil prices fall again. Here are two stocks with higher yields today and strong histories of rewarding investors through good times and bad: ExxonMobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM) and The Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG).

Top 10 Oil Stocks For 2019: Marathon Oil Corporation(MRO)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Marathon Oil (NYSE:MRO) also has cashed in on the improvement in oil prices. Shares of the U.S. oil company are up more than 80% over the past year — making it one of the best-performing oil stocks of 2018 — due to the impact higher oil prices are having on its cash flow. Like EOG, Marathon Oil set its budget to run on $50 oil, which has it on pace to produce $500 million in free cash at $60 a barrel and even more at current prices.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

That ability to organically discover new shale plays has saved it a ton of money. The company was able to quietly gobble up 50,000 acres in Oklahoma over a four-year period for just $750 an acre. Contrast that with rivals Devon Energy (NYSE:DVN) and Marathon Oil (NYSE:MRO). Devon spent $1.9 billion to buy Felix Energy in late 2015 for the company’s 80,000 acres in Oklahoma, paying a whopping $23,750 an acre. Meanwhile, Marathon paid $888 million for PayRock Energy and its 61,000 acres in the state, which amounted to roughly $14,500 an acre. EOG’s deep knowledge of shale helps it know where to look so it can lock up land for next to nothing before rivals even know what’s there.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

The stock market largely gained ground on Friday, although triple-digit gains for the Dow Jones Industrial Average were offset somewhat by modest losses in the Nasdaq Composite. European Union tariffs were set to take effect today on more than $3 billion in U.S. goods, representing the latest escalation in trade tensions between the U.S. and trade partners across the globe. Yet investors were ready for a break after several days of poor performance for the overall market, and good news from several companies helped set a positive mood on Wall Street. Marathon Oil (NYSE:MRO), WillScot (NASDAQ: WSC), and Del Taco Restaurants (NASDAQ:TACO) were among the best performers on the day. Here’s why they did so well.

Top 10 Oil Stocks For 2019: Magellan Midstream Partners L.P.(MMP)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Meanwhile, the return multiples for many of the projects under development by Magellan Midstream Partners (NYSE:MMP) are in the six- to eight-times EBITDA range. Because of that, the $1.7 billion of expansion projects Magellan currently has underway only will generate about $250 million in incidental EBITDA. That’s partially why Magellan Midstream expects to grow its payout at a slower pace of 8% this year and a 5% to 8% annual rate in 2019 and 2020, even though it plans on paying out the same percentage of its cash flow as ONEOK.

Let’s compare the stories of Spectra Energy Partners (NYSE:SEP) and Magellan Midstream Partners (NYSE:MMP). The scales are tilted in favor of one of these high-yielding master limited partnerships (MLPs), making it a much better buy right now.

    Energy Transfer Partners BBB-/Baa3 5.2 N/A

Data sources: Company presentations and YCharts. TTM = trailing 12 months.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Meanwhile, MPLX took another step forward in early September after the company and its partners — fellow MLPs Energy Transfer Partners (NYSE:ETP) and Magellan Midstream Partners (NYSE:MMP) as well as refiner Delek US Holdings — secured enough shippers to move ahead with construction on the Permian Gulf Coast Pipeline. The 600-mile pipeline will move crude oil from the Permian to the Texas coast. From there, it will flow into Energy Transfer Partners’ Nederland terminal as well as Magellan Midstream Partners’ East Houston terminal. The partners expect that the system will be in operation by the middle of 2020. It’s a crucial project for the industry since there currently isn’t enough pipeline capacity to move oil out of the Permian.

Fortunately for those looking at these attractive valuations, oil’s end-of-days scenario is likely a ways down the road. Top 10 Oil Stocks To Watch For 2019: ConocoPhillips(COP)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By John Bromels]

Oil prices are at their highest levels in three years, and that means that oil companies — both producers like ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) and integrated majors like BP (NYSE:BP) — are rolling in the dough right now, in part because of cost-cutting during the price downturn.

  • [By Max Byerly]

IPG Investment Advisors LLC purchased a new stake in shares of ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) during the second quarter, HoldingsChannel.com reports. The fund purchased 3,931 shares of the energy producer’s stock, valued at approximately $274,000.

  • [By Chris Lange]

The number of ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP) shares short fell to 11.83 million from the previous 12.60 million. Shares were trading at $71.30, within a 52-week range of $45.65 to $74.73.

  • [By Paul Ausick]

The country’s largest oil producers can make money at these prices. What they do with that money, however, has an effect on how analysts view and rate the firms. Bank of America Merrill Lynch Thursday morning dropped its rating on two producers, Chevron Corp. (NYSE: CVX) and ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP), both lowered from Buy to Neutral. On Conoco the analysts cited valuation and on Chevron they cited capital spending and re-contracting risk.

Top 10 Oil Stocks To Watch For 2019: Encana Corporation(ECA)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By ]

Already, shale companies such as Encana (ECA) , Occidental Petroleum (OXY) and Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD) , among others, are reporting higher cash flows and earnings on higher oil prices. As a result, they are paying down debt, increasing dividends and engaging in buybacks. This is a dramatic improvement in shareholder yield for the group.

  • [By Joseph Griffin]

Morgan Stanley set a $19.00 price objective on Encana (NYSE:ECA) (TSE:ECA) in a report published on Friday morning. The brokerage currently has a buy rating on the oil and gas company’s stock.

While we aren’t prognosticators on crude oil prices, there does appear to be a lot of value in the energy sector at this price level. • [By Tyler Crowe]

Three stocks on my watchlist that look incredibly cheap and will likely be high up on my next buy list are LGI Homes (NASDAQ:LGIH), U.S. Silica Holdings (NYSE:SLCA), and Transocean (NYSE:RIG). Top 10 Oil Stocks To Watch For 2019: Apache Corporation(APA)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By John Bromels]

Three such companies that look like good buys right now are Royal Dutch Shell (NYSE:RDS-A)(NYSE:RDS-B), Enterprise Products Partners (NYSE:EPD), and Apache Corporation (NYSE:APA). Here’s why they may be good picks for your portfolio:

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Apache Corporation (NYSE:APA) stunned the oil and gas world in late 2016 by announcing the discovery of the Alpine High play in a long-overlooked spot of the Permian Basin. The company believed that it had uncovered more than 3 billion barrels of oil and even more natural gas, which would drive growth for years to come. However, that growth wouldn’t materialize overnight because Apache first had to build out the infrastructure needed to develop the field from scratch.

  • [By John Bromels]

When most people think about oil and gas drillers, they think about integrated majors like ExxonMobil (NYSE:XOM) or maybe a producer whose name they’ve seen on a gas station, like Hess (NYSE:HES). One most don’t think about is Apache Corporation (NYSE:APA).

  • [By ]

Now, I haven’t dabbled in U.S. shale oil or in the permian basin since I extracted myself from Apache (APA) several months ago after an epic fight in the name of capital preservation. But The Wall Street Journal ran a piece last week explaining that due to already-mentioned distribution bottlenecks, Permian-basin oil prices had fallen below $60 a barrel despite the fact that WTI futures were trading above $70.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

The IEA’s forecast bodes well for oil stocks, especially those that have underperformed during the rally over the past year. Two that stand out are Newfield Exploration (NYSE:NFX) and Apache (NYSE:APA), since both have lost value even though oil has been red-hot. Because of that, they trade at dirt cheap valuations versus their peers. That underperformance doesn’t make sense given the growth these companies can deliver at much lower oil prices.

Top 10 Oil Stocks To Watch For 2019: Marathon Oil Corporation(MRO)

The shares were sold at an average price of $20.69, for a total value of $2,427,619.77. • [By Zacks]

Oil production is surging in Canada but producers are far from happy as their profit margin is sinking and they are striving to stay competitive with their U.S. counterparts. While upstream companies like Marathon Oil Corporation (NYSE: MRO), Hess Corporation (NYSE: HES) and others are enjoying the shale boom and rebound in prices in the United States, their Canadian counterparts like Cenovus Energy Inc. (NYSE: CVE) and others are thinking of reducing production. The primary reason behind this is the shortage of pipelines in the country. In short, pipeline construction in Canada has failed to keep pace with rising domestic oil production – the heavier sour variety churned out of the oil sands –  resulting in infrastructural bottlenecks. This has also forced producers to give away their products at a discounted rate.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

That efficiency was evident in the first quarter when companies like Devon Energy (NYSE:DVN) and Marathon Oil (NYSE:MRO) drilled record-breaking wells. In Devon Energy’s case, it completed two of the highest-rate wells ever drilled in the nearly 100-year history of the Delaware Basin. Those wells, when combined with some prolific ones in the STACK shale play, enabled Devon to produce a huge profit in the first quarter. Marathon Oil, meanwhile, drilled record-setting wells in two formations of the Bakken region as well as several high-rate ones in the STACK, which fueled strong profits for the driller in the first quarter.

  • [By Shane Hupp]

Marathon Oil Co. (NYSE:MRO) declared a quarterly dividend on Wednesday, January 30th, RTT News reports. Shareholders of record on Wednesday, February 20th will be paid a dividend of 0.05 per share by the oil and gas producer on Monday, March 11th. This represents a $0.20 annualized dividend and a yield of 1.29%. The ex-dividend date of this dividend is Tuesday, February 19th.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Marathon Oil (NYSE:MRO) put the wraps on a strong year by delivering solid fourth-quarter results, which came in slightly ahead of expectations. With that, the company exceeded its initial growth projection for the year while sticking to its budget, and was thus able to generate and return lots of cash to shareholders. The company expects more of the same in 2019 as its drilling machine aims to continue printing money.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Marathon Oil (NYSE:MRO) delivered strong operational and financial results through the third quarter of last year, which had the company on track to end 2018 on a high note. Investors will find out whether that’s the case when the company reports its fourth-quarter results. That’s one of several things they should keep their eye on when reviewing that report.

Whiting Petroleum Corp (NYSE:WLL) gapped up before the market opened on Tuesday . The stock had previously closed at $53.25, but opened at $51.53. Whiting Petroleum shares last traded at $52.01, with a volume of 68181 shares.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Friday was a down day on Wall Street, but losses were generally small, and the market closed well above its lowest levels of the session. Initially, investors seemed concerned about further trade tensions between the U.S. and China, but upon further reflection, they appeared to draw comfort from considerable fundamental strength from key sectors of the industrial economy. Even with the overall market recovering from earlier weakness, some stocks still posted substantial declines. Whiting Petroleum (NYSE:WLL), Global Blood Therapeutics (NASDAQ:GBT), and First Solar (NASDAQ:FSLR) were among the worst performers on the day. Here’s why they did so poorly.

Top 10 Oil Stocks To Watch For 2019: Williams Partners L.P.(WPZ)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Stephan Byrd]

Barclays set a $46.00 price target on Williams Pipeline Partners (NYSE:WPZ) in a research note published on Saturday. The brokerage currently has a hold rating on the pipeline company’s stock.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Williams Companies is in the midst of a major transition. It recently agreed to acquire the rest of its MLP, Williams Partners (NYSE:WPZ), in a $10.4 billion deal. The pipeline giant is making this acquisition so that it can more easily finance the expansion projects Williams Partners has under development. The transaction would allow it to free up some cash flow and improve its credit metrics, giving it more financial flexibility.

  • [By Jason Hall]

Frankly, today’s big drop shouldn’t be a surprise for anyone. The company told us many months ago that common equity investors would only retain 2% — at most — of the company when it completed its bankruptcy proceedings, yet investors continued to pay a price for its stock that, at one point, would have made Seadrill worth nearly as much as competitors Transocean (NYSE:RIG), Diamond Offshore (NYSE:DO), and Noble Corporation (NYSE:NE) combined. But a relatively steady decline in the share price, combined with today’s big drop, seems to be finally putting Seadrill more in line with its peers.

Top Oil Stocks To Invest In Right Now: Magellan Midstream Partners L.P.(MMP)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

  • [By Ethan Ryder]

Magellan Midstream Partners (NYSE:MMP) had its price target boosted by Barclays from $72.00 to $74.00 in a research note released on Monday morning. Barclays currently has an equal weight rating on the pipeline company’s stock.

  • [By Reuben Gregg Brewer, Travis Hoium, and Chuck Saletta]

Often a high yield is an indication of a stock that’s facing some sort of trouble — but not always. If you take the time, you can find high-yield stocks worth buying if you look in the right places. For example, decidedly low-tech Lamar Advertising Company (NASDAQ:LAMR), beaten-up midstream player Magellan Midstream Partners, LP (NYSE:MMP), and renewable power-focused TerraForm Power, Inc. (NASDAQ:TERP) come from vastly different industries. However, each of these high-yield stocks has a solid business and good growth prospects.

Top Oil Stocks To Invest In Right Now: Apache Corporation(APA)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By John Bromels]

When most people think about oil and gas drillers, they think about integrated majors like ExxonMobil (NYSE:XOM) or maybe a producer whose name they’ve seen on a gas station, like Hess (NYSE:HES). One most don’t think about is Apache Corporation (NYSE:APA).

  • [By Chris Lange]

The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage loss ahead of the close was Apache Corp. (NYSE: APA) which traded down about 4% at $42.73. The stock’s 52-week range is $33.60 to $51.21. Volume was over 6 million compared to the daily average volume of 4.5 million.

Apache (NYSE:APA)‘s stock had its “hold” rating reaffirmed by research analysts at Stifel Nicolaus in a report released on Thursday. It seems like a great time to buy in, but you still shouldn’t just buy any oil and gas stock. On June 27, shares of Seadrill Ltd (NYSE:SDRL), Diamond Offshore Drilling Inc (NYSE:DO), and Ensco PLC (NYSE:ESV) traded up more than 10% at various points. And while they’ve cooled off a bit — up 9.9%, 10.3%, and 8.9%, respectively, at recent prices — they continue to march toward today’s close with big gains. And while not quite as much as the three aforementioned companies, shares of Transocean LTD (NYSE:RIG) and Noble Corporation PLC (NYSE:NE) are showing big days as well, up 6.4% and 7.2% in late-afternoon trading.

Top 10 Oil Stocks To Own Right Now: Marathon Oil Corporation(MRO)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Marathon Oil (NYSE:MRO) is another oil producer built for $50 oil. At that level, Marathon can generate enough cash to grow its U.S. oil production 25% to 30% this year, while at $60 oil, the company can produce $500 million in free cash — and even more at current prices. Marathon Oil has a range of options for that money, including buying back shares, boosting the dividend, paying off debt, or acquiring more drillable land.

One way to balance the needs of income and preserving your nest egg is to invest in stocks that can pay a consistent and growing dividend. Using dividend payouts as an income stream leaves your principle intact and gives it a chance to grow over time. The trick is finding top-shelf dividend stocks that will deliver for decades to come. Three stocks that have this quality are pipeline master limited partnership Magellan Midstream Partners (NYSE:MMP), healthcare real estate investment trust HCP Inc. (NYSE:HCP), and alternative asset manager Brookfield Infrastructure Partners (NYSE:BIP). Here’s why you should consider these three for your retirement.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

That outperformance adds up over time. Case in point: Magellan Midstream Partners (NYSE:MMP). Over the last decade, the master limited partnership (MLP) has tallied a total return of more than 540%, which crushed the S&P 500’s total return of around 190%. And that outperformance could continue as the MLP expects to keep growing its high-yield payout at a steady pace for at least the next few years — which makes it a great stock to consider buying.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Magellan Midstream Partners (NYSE:MMP) is one of the best master limited partnerships (MLPs) around. The oil and refined products pipeline and storage company boasts one of the top credit ratings and financial profiles in the sector. As a result, the company’s 5.6%-yielding distribution is on rock-solid ground.

Top 10 Oil Stocks To Own Right Now: Encana Corporation(ECA)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Jon C. Ogg]

Encana Corp. (NYSE: ECA) may be one of the most undervalued companies in the energy patch. The Canadian energy player was given upside of almost 60% in a call from Merrill Lynch that noted the innovative shale leader has an infrastructure advantage and rising free cash flow.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Canada’s Montney Shale doesn’t currently capture investors’ attention like the Permian Basin. However, that doesn’t mean it’s a second-tier play. Quite the contrary since, like the Permian, it’s a resource-rich region with as many as six drillable formations that produce highly economic liquids-rich natural gas. Because of those features, it has become an important growth driver for companies like Encana (NYSE:ECA).

Top 10 Oil Stocks To Own Right Now: Williams Partners L.P.(WPZ)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Tyler Crowe, Jason Hall, and Matthew DiLallo]

Matt DiLallo (Williams Companies): This natural gas pipeline giant has had a slow start in 2018. Through the first half of the year, cash flow at the company’s MLP Williams Partners (NYSE:WPZ) has only increased by about 2%, due mainly to recent asset sales. However, with a major expansion project coming on line, cash flow growth should accelerate in the second half of the year. That project and others in the pipeline have the company on track to grow cash flow 9% in 2018 and another 13% next year.

Hot Oil Stocks For 2019

It can be hard to find great marijuana dividend stocks.

Medical marijuana was first legalized less than 20 years ago in California, so most cannabis companies haven’t been established long enough to make a profit, let alone pay a portion of their profits to shareholders in the form of dividends.

However, investors looking for marijuana stocks with dividends have another option…

Investing in marijuana “pick-and-shovel” plays that offer hefty dividends.

Pick-and-shovel plays allow you to benefit from an industry’s success without taking on the risk that comes with startups.

It’s like investing in Levi Strauss & Co. during the California Gold Rush of the 1840s and 50s. Levi’s didn’t mine gold, but it supplied the garments for the thousands of men who did.

The company’s slogan back then was even “For Men Who Toil.”

Since then, Levi Strass & Co. has become the largest pants manufacturer in the world.

Marijuana pick-and-shovel plays allow investors to profit from the legal pot industry without the risk of owning stock in a company whose product is still illegal under federal law. And because these stocks pay dividends, investors can reinvest their cash rewards to maximize their future returns.

Hot Oil Stocks For 2019: Magellan Midstream Partners L.P.(MMP)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Reuben Gregg Brewer]

The only potential problem for investors has been Enterprise’s funding choices. Partnerships are designed to pass cash on to unitholders, leaving little money for capital investments. That means that capital spending is often funded by issuing debt, potentially increasing leverage, or new units, which dilutes current unitholders. The latter is the key issue right now. Over the past five years the partnership’s unit count has increased by nearly 20%. For comparison, Magellan Midstream Partners, LP (NYSE:MMP) has effectively issued no new units over the same span while still managing to expand its business with sizable capital projects.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

That’s why those who like dividends will undoubtedly love what Enterprise Products Partners (NYSE:EPD), Magellan Midstream Partners (NYSE:MMP), and MPLX (NYSE:MPLX) have to offer. Not only does this trio of energy midstream master limited partnerships (MLPs) pay well-above-average dividends that currently have yields of between 5.6% and 7.2%, but they have consistently increased their payment rate each quarter. With those payouts on rock-solid ground and more growth in the forecast, this trio of MLPs is perfect for dividend fans.

Hot Oil Stocks For 2019: Apache Corporation(APA)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Apache Corporation (NYSE:APA) stunned the oil and gas world in late 2016 by announcing the discovery of the Alpine High play in a long-overlooked spot of the Permian Basin. The company believed that it had uncovered more than 3 billion barrels of oil and even more natural gas, which would drive growth for years to come. However, that growth wouldn’t materialize overnight because Apache first had to build out the infrastructure needed to develop the field from scratch.

  • [By Joseph Griffin]

Meridian Wealth Management LLC purchased a new stake in Apache Co. (NYSE:APA) in the fourth quarter, according to its most recent Form 13F filing with the Securities & Exchange Commission. The fund purchased 9,729 shares of the energy company’s stock, valued at approximately $255,000.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Oil prices have continued rebounding this year, with the U.S. benchmark price WTI up another 7% to around $65 per barrel. That improving oil price has helped drive up most oil stocks. I say most because Devon Energy (NYSE:DVN), Apache (NYSE:APA), and Newfield Exploration (NYSE:NFX) are flat to down so far this year because investors seem to have overlooked them entirely. Because of that, they trade for a dirt-cheap valuation versus their peers, making them intriguing options to consider.

Hot Oil Stocks For 2019: Halliburton Company(HAL)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

That’s clear by the comments of oil-field services giants Halliburton (NYSE:HAL) and Schlumberger (NYSE:SLB) in September, as both issued warnings about the impact this would have on their industry. In Halliburton’s case, it said that the slowdown in the Permian, as well as some slower-to-develop work in the Middle East, would knock $0.08 to $0.10 per share off its earnings in the third quarter. Meanwhile, Schlumberger’s CEO said that “these [pipeline] challenges will likely have a dampening effect on production growth, wellhead prices, and investment levels in the coming year.”

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

We’re already starting to see signs of a slowdown. Fellow oil-field services giant Halliburton (NYSE:HAL) recently warned that while “we thought there would be a downturn in activity [in the Permian] due to budget constraints and takeaway issues… it’s more than we expected.” This higher-than-anticipated slowdown has created more vacancy on its calendar, which is putting pressure on service prices. Because of that, and some other issues, Halliburton’s earnings in the third quarter will likely come in $0.08 to $0.10 per share below expectations.

  • [By Logan Wallace]

Ladenburg Thalmann Financial Services Inc. decreased its position in shares of Halliburton (NYSE:HAL) by 2.9% during the first quarter, HoldingsChannel reports. The firm owned 43,482 shares of the oilfield services company’s stock after selling 1,312 shares during the period. Ladenburg Thalmann Financial Services Inc.’s holdings in Halliburton were worth $2,035,000 at the end of the most recent reporting period.

The worst losses came for the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite, which was down largely on worries about social media companies and the potential for government regulation of their operations. Top 10 Oil Stocks To Watch Right Now: ConocoPhillips(COP)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Jon C. Ogg]

Goldman Sachs has made a key rotation in its oil and gas sector coverage. The firm downgraded ConcoPhillips (NYSE: COP) to Neutral from Buy now that its shares had risen more than 40% so far in 2018 alone. That blows away the performance of most energy index leaders, and this downgrade is based on the good news now being reflected in the shares. Goldman Sachs analyst Neil Mehta has an $81 price target on ConocoPhillips, which compares with the prior closing price of $79.89 and its 52-week high of $80.24.

  • [By Max Byerly]

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

A third factor to focus on is how an E&P company allocates its oil-fueled cash flows. Some oil companies take the “drill, baby, drill” mentality and spend everything that comes in, and then some, on new wells. That approach, however, can lead them to pile on debt, which can be their undoing during the next downturn. That’s why investors should look for oil companies that keep spending to within cash flow. Though the best ones spend much less than what comes in, which gives them excess cash that they can return to shareholders via dividends and buybacks. That more conservative approach helps ensure they don’t drill their own grave. An excellent example of an adept capital allocator is ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP). The U.S. oil giant aims to return 20% to 30% of its cash flow to investors via dividends and share buybacks each year while reinvesting the rest on oil projects that are profitable under $50 a barrel. Because of that more conservative approach, ConocoPhillips will avoid drilling itself into trouble by outspending cash flow on new wells to chase production growth. Many oil stocks provide detailed cash flow analysis on the most recent investor presentation posted to their website.

Top 10 Oil Stocks To Watch Right Now: Transocean Inc.(RIG)

Ocean Rig UDW (NYSE: RIG) and Transocean (NYSE:RIG) are both mid-cap oils/energy companies, but which is the superior business? We will compare the two companies based on the strength of their profitability, earnings, valuation, risk, dividends, analyst recommendations and institutional ownership.

As for individual stocks, Amazon.com (NASDAQ:AMZN) briefly broke through $1 trillion in valuation, and Transocean Ltd. (NYSE:RIG) announced plans to acquire Ocean Rig UDW (NASDAQ:ORIG).

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Shares of RigNet are up more than 18% since the announcement. However, the company’s stock price had been in rally mode well before that news, rocketing 75% since the end of July. While some notable improvements in its second-quarter results likely helped ignite this rally, the company is also benefiting from the belief that the long-awaited offshore drilling recovery is beginning to unfold. The most recent comments supporting that view came from Transocean’s (NYSE:RIG) CEO Jeremy Thigpen. He stated last week that he expects lease rates on rigs to improve, and that contracting activity should pick up in late 2019. Based on that outlook, he said that “we are far more bullish than we have been historically,” which is one reason Transocean recently made another major acquisition.

  • [By Jon C. Ogg]

Transocean Ltd. (NYSE: RIG) started as Overweight with a $15 price target, which represented an implied upside call of 25% compared with the prior day’s $11.93 closing price. Elsewhere, Wells Fargo raised it to Outperform from Market Perform with an even more aggressive $16 price target, and BTIG initiated Transocean with a Buy rating and with an $18 price target just a day earlier. The stock closed up 2.9% at $11.93 on Tuesday, and it was up 3.3% at $12.33 in Wednesday’s midday trading. The 52-week range is $8.70 to $14.34, and the prior consensus price target of $12.61 ticked up to above $13 after the calls.

Thanks to red-hot oil prices over the past year, oil stocks are up sharply. To give some sense of the magnitude of the rebound, the iShares U.S. Oil & Gas Exploration & Production ETF (NYSEMKT:IEO) — which holds more than 60 U.S.-focused oil and gas stocks — has rallied nearly 33% over the last 12 months. However, while that rising tide has lifted most boats, not all oil and gas stocks have enjoyed the oil market’s rebound. In fact, some stocks have managed to lose ground in the past year. Two of those laggards are Antero Resources (NYSE:AR) and Apache Corporation (NYSE:APA), which have declined 6% and 12%, respectively, in the last year.
