Top 10 Low Price Stocks For 2019

This stock’s low price isn’t going to last forever — it’s time to get in while the getting’s good.

One of the main goals of my premium newsletter High-Yield Investing is stability. I like industries that don’t go through unpredictable hot and cold cycles. Student Transportation (NYSE: STB) is a textbook example.

Millions of kids must travel to and from school each day, rain or shine. With a national fleet of school buses and a stack of contracts with various school districts, the company generates consistent, recurring income to share with its stockholders. That, along with its current yield of 5.9%, is why STB remains one of my readers’ favorite stocks.

My next recommendation enjoys similar stability thanks to another fact of life — babies.

In the unpredictable financial world, there are few things as guaranteed as birth rates. There were approximately 4 million births in the U.S. last year, 4 million give or take in 2016, 4 million in 2015, 4 million in 2014, 4 million in 2013. I could go on, all the way back to the 1950s, with little deviation year to year.

Best Value Stocks To Buy For 2019

The Federal Reserve isn’t pleased with Wells Fargo’s (NYSE:WFC) scandals, but it isn’t opposed to the bank paying out billions of dollars to its shareholders.

Yesterday, the Fed said it had no objection to Wells Fargo’s capital plan, which calls for increasing its quarterly dividends to $0.43 per share, up from $0.39, and buying back up to $24.5 billion of stock over the next four quarters.

Approval for big payouts also suggests to me that Wells Fargo is on the way out of regulatory troubles for its fake account scandals and historical sales practices, and it could soon be given the green light to grow once again.

Beefy buybacks

To be sure, a 10% increase in Wells Fargo’s quarterly dividend is nothing to sneeze at, but the $24.5 billion boost to its buyback capacity is the real prize. It’s the largest buyback plan of any of the big four U.S. banks.

Wells Fargo was valued at about $261 billion at market close yesterday, which suggests the company could repurchase more than 9% of its outstanding shares, assuming it bought back stock at recent market prices.

Monday was a positive day on Wall Street, as major benchmarks jumped following an uneventful weekend, tapering their gains as the session came to a close. Some had feared that China might retaliate once again after the U.S. issued a second round of tariffs against the nation with the world’s second-largest economy, but the expected fireworks didn’t come, putting market participants more at ease. The beginning of earnings season in the next week will also distract investors from geopolitical issues, perhaps allowing indexes to climb further. Yet some individual stocks had difficulties that sent their shares lower. Yandex (NASDAQ:YNDX), Menlo Therapeutics (NASDAQ:MNLO), and MGIC Investment (NYSE:MTG) were among the worst performers on the day. Here’s why they did so poorly.

NEW YORK — Walgreen is moving 120,000 employees to a private health insurance exchange from coverage provided directly from carriers, the company will announce Wednesday.
The pharmacy chain will join 17 other large employers on the Aon Hewitt Corporate Health Exchange as part of a growing movement to offer employees fixed dollar amounts to purchase their own plans on such exchanges.
The end-cost to employees depends on the plan chosen, but they typically get more options than under traditional arrangements. Private exchanges mimic the coverage mandated as part of the Affordable Care Act. Enrollment in the public exchanges starts Oct. 1.
“What happens to employer contributions over time? Will they put in as much as they put in the past? These are unanswered questions but potential negatives,” says Paul Fronstin, a senior research associate with the Employee Benefit Research Institute. The benefit to Walgreen and other employers is unknown at this point, as their cost-savings aren’t clear.
Of the 180,000 Walgreen (WAG) employees eligible for health care insurance, 120,000 opted for coverage for themselves and 40,000 family members. Another 60,000 employees, many of them working part-time, weren’t eligible for health insurance.
Aon Hewitt (AON) says other participants in its program include retailer Sears Holding (SHLD) and Darden Restaurants (DRI). These new additions raise enrollment to 330,000 from 100,000 last year, and Aon Hewitt estimates enrollment will jump to 600,000 next year, a fivefold increase from 2012.
By 2017, nearly 20 percent of employees nationwide could get their health insurance through a private exchange, according to Accenture Research (ACN). A recent report by the National Business Group on Health said that 30 percent of large employers are considering moving active employees to exchanges by 2015.

It’s been an interesting few years for T-shirt manufacturer Delta Apparel (NYSEMKT:DLA). A huge spike in cotton prices in 2011 helped turn a near-$2 EPS in FY11 into a loss in FY12. (DLA fiscal years then ended in June; the company moved to September in 2013.) Delta managed to recover in FY13, getting EPS back over $1 – and then the company’s Soffe brand started falling apart, pushing the company back into the red in FY14. Shares fell by more than half between late 2013 and late 2014.

In response, Delta management decided to cut corporate costs to improve margins, and the acquisition of popular brand Salt Life in 2013 added a potential growth engine to complement the relatively stagnant core business. At the beginning of 2015, shares languished around $8; they’d spike to $25 by July 2016, as adjusted earnings improved substantially. After another pullback, a post-election run has moved DLA to just over $20.

Looking forward, I do think there’s more upside, with another round of significant cost savings due to hit the P&L in FY17. The risk is that those cost savings need to be balanced against a core business that still isn’t performing all that well, and a business that over the long-term hasn’t exactly been impressive in either growth or shareholder return:

Staples (SPLS) soared to the top of the S&P 500 today on reports that the office-supplies retailer was considering selling itself.

    Agence France-Presse/Getty Images

Staples gained 9.8% to $9.51 today, while the S&P 500 ticked up 0.1% to 2,360.16.

CFRA’s Efraim Levy doesn’t see a “natural buyer” for Staples but remain Buy rated anyway:

Shares are higher on an unconfirmed WSJ report that SPLS is looking at the possible sale of the company. Our fundamentally valued 12-month target of $11, applies a below historical average P/E of 12.1X our FY 18 EPS estimate, given office industry challenges. Our target has 11% upside, plus a 5.5% yield. We don’t see a natural buyer for a large physical store office supply presence, although an activist/private-equity buyer is a possibility. To make an acquisition worthwhile, a buyer would have to be more aggressive in cost cutting and use of cash flow than SPLS’s existing plan.

Staples’ market capitalization rose to $6.2 billion today from $5.7 billion yesterday. It reported a net loss of $459 million on sales of $18.2 billion in fiscal 2017.
