Top 5 Safest Stocks To Watch For 2019

The anxiety, frustration and second-guessing builds during times like these, but you must remain vigilant and, more important, patient.

Since the market peaked at the end of January and subsequently slid into its first correction in two years, we’ve been patiently waiting to see whether this is “just” a correction or if it’s the start of the next bear market.

But as the market consolidates before its next move, the anticipation can be almost too much for many investors. In times like these, mistakes are made and money is lost. Investing strategies and discipline get tossed out the window as traders base their next move on the daily swings of the market. Top 5 Safest Stocks To Watch For 2019: PIMCO 25+ Year Zero Coupon US Trs ETF (ZROZ)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By ]

My preferred fund here is Vanguard Extended Duration Treasury ETF (NYSE: EDV), which owns a basket of long-term, zero-coupon bonds. It’s better-known, larger, and, most important, cheaper than its competitor PIMCO 25+ Year Zero Coupon U.S. Treasury Index Exchange-Traded Fund (NYSE: ZROZ). Both are poised to rally if deflation hits and the stock market falls. But EDV is cheaper, at only 0.07% expense ratio, compared with ZROZ’s 0.15%, and so it’s the one that makes the cut.

If there is one thing Phillips 66 (NYSE:PSX) has done well since it became a publicly traded company, it’s return loads of cash to shareholders. Not only does it have a generous dividend that yields 3.4%, but it also has bought back an incredible amount of shares to boost earnings per share. This past quarter, the company really went out of its way to emphasize these points as the reason why investors should invest in the oil refiner. This strategy has also richly rewarded investors in Phillips 66 Partners, which has generated a total return of 89% since its IPO despite a recent sell-off, easily ahead of the S&P 500’s nearly 73% total return over that time frame.

Top 10 Energy Stocks To Buy Right Now

Monday was a big day on Wall Street, with major benchmarks moving generally higher to start the week. Strong performance in the energy market once again led stocks higher, including a nice gain in oil prices to move above the $72-per-barrel mark. The small-cap Russell 2000 Index hit another record high, but some companies reported news that prevented them from participating in the broader-based rally. Fifth Third Bancorp (NASDAQ:FITB), Qudian (NYSE:QD), and U.S. Steel (NYSE:X) were among the worst performers on the day. Here’s why they did so poorly.

Did Fifth Third pay too much?

Shares of Fifth Third Bancorp fell 8% after the company announced that it would purchase Chicago-based MB Financial for $4.7 billion. For its part, Fifth Third believes that the deal will “creat[e] a leading retail and commercial franchise in the attractive Chicago market” for financial institutions. Yet the share price decline reflects investor worries that Fifth Third might have paid too much for MB. The cash and stock deal includes MB shareholders receiving cash of just $5.54 per share, with the remaining 90% of total consideration coming in the form of 1.45 shares of Fifth Third stock for every MB share. It’s fairly typical for shares of an acquirer in a merger involving mostly stock to see declines, but the extent of Fifth Third’s retreat indicates at least some skepticism regarding the price of the deal.

The IEA’s forecast bodes well for oil stocks, especially those that have underperformed during the rally over the past year. Two that stand out are Newfield Exploration (NYSE:NFX) and Apache (NYSE:APA), since both have lost value even though oil has been red-hot. Because of that, they trade at dirt cheap valuations versus their peers. That underperformance doesn’t make sense given the growth these companies can deliver at much lower oil prices.

Wall Street suffered a sharp drop on Tuesday, with major benchmarks posting substantial declines in response to a combination of economic factors. The yield on the 10-year Treasury bond climbed above 3% for the first time since 2014, but of greater concern to many market participants were remarks in major corporate earnings reports suggesting that business conditions had likely hit their peak and were poised to deteriorate going forward. With raw materials costs starting to pick up, many manufacturers are reporting inflationary pressures that could hurt profits. Yet even as the broader indexes fell, some individual companies had good news to report. More than two years after a government crackdown on corruption sent Macau gaming stocks tumbling, The Chinese government has unveiled yet another new regulation on the Macau gaming industry that has hit gaming stocks hard. The latest new law cut the daily ATM withdrawal limit in Macau from 10,000 patacas to 5,000 patacas, or roughly $626.

Unfortunately, transparency and predictability has never been one of the Chinese government’s strong points. Wynn Resorts, Limited (NASDAQ: WYNN) CEO Steve Wynn said the government’s behavior was “preposterous” when it kept operators in the dark about how many table games they would be allotted just weeks prior to opening billion-dollar new resorts. For the record, none of the major operators that have opened resorts in the past two years have received the table allotment they requested.

Although the U.S. gaming market likely doesn’t have the kind of long-term growth potential that Macau does, U.S. casinos are doing just fine these days. In the current fiscal year, Las Vegas Strip revenue is trending about 6% ahead of last year, and other regions of the country are doing even better. For better or worse, U.S. stock investors likely won’t have to worry about new regulations in the next four years under President-elect Trump.

This strategy of acquiring assets from a large parent company to grow an MLP’s payout has worked well over the years. Refining giant Phillips 66 (NYSE:PSX) has been one of the most successful with this strategy since creating Phillips 66 Partners (NYSE:PSXP) in 2013. At that time, Phillips 66 launched an ambitious plan to grow its MLP’s distribution at a 30% compound annual rate through 2018 via a steady stream of dropdown transactions. Phillips 66 Partners is right on target, having increased the payout at a 31% compound annual growth rate since the IPO while maintaining solid financial metrics, including covering the payout with cash flow by a very comfortable 1.33 times last quarter and maintaining a conservative debt-to-EBITDA ratio of 3.2 in 2017. This strategy has also richly rewarded investors in Phillips 66 Partners, which has generated a total return of 89% since its IPO despite a recent sell-off, easily ahead of the S&P 500’s nearly 73% total return over that time frame.

Top 10 Energy Stocks To Buy For 2019: EOG Resources, Inc.(EOG)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

That prediction would have been unfathomable just a few months ago. While some oil bulls thought prices could surprise to the upside, the consensus outlook was that crude would be in the low to mid $50s this year thanks to surging U.S. oil production. Because of that, most producers based their budgets on oil averaging $50 a barrel, includingEOG Resources (NYSE:EOG), Marathon Oil (NYSE:MRO), and Anadarko Petroleum (NYSE:APC). In EOG Resources’ case, $50 oil would provide it with the cash flow to pay a dividend that was 10.4% higher than 2017’s level and drill 690 more wells, which would boost oil production about 18%. Meanwhile, Marathon Oil could produce enough cash at that price point to pay its dividend and fund the new wells needed to boost companywide output 12% compared to last year. Anadarko Petroleum, likewise, could fully fund its dividend and a growth-focused capital plan, which would see it boost oil output 14% this year.

Leading shale driller EOG Resources (NYSE:EOG) built its business to prosper at $50 a barrel. At that price point, the company can generate enough cash to grow oil production by 16% to 20% this year. And at $60 oil, EOG Resources could produce $1.5 billion in free cash, with even more at current prices. EOG plans to use its incoming windfall to pay off debt and boost its dividend, both of which should grow shareholder value.

Top 10 Energy Stocks To Buy For 2019: Shell Midstream Partners, L.P.(SHLX)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Reuben Gregg Brewer]

There’s an interesting dichotomy here, however. Crestwood was looking to stay financially disciplined, but it also needed to invest to grow. Doing both at the same time is difficult, which is why it partnered up with Con Ed in the Marcellus region, Shell Midstream Partners LP (NYSE:SHLX) and First Reserve in the Delaware Basin, and Williams Partners (NYSE:WPZ) in the Powder River basin. These agreements allow Crestwood to keep expanding its business without having to foot the entire bill for the investments.

Most investors have probably heard of energy giants Royal Dutch Shell (NYSE:RDS-A) (NYSE:RDS-B), Dominion Energy (NYSE:D), and TransCanada (NYSE:TRP). Fewer, however, are likely familiar with their publicly traded master limited partnerships (MLPs): Shell Midstream Partners (NYSE:SHLX), Dominion Energy Midstream Partners (NYSE:DM), and TC Pipelines (NYSE:TCP). That might be a good thing, as the market has beaten up the latter trio this year, sending their valuations south.

Saudi Aramco’s valuation, however, isn’t the only one that would benefit from a pop in the price of crude. Many oil producers in the U.S. restructured their operations to run on $50 oil, so if the Saudi strategy is successful, these oil companies would produce a gusher of cash flow, which could fuel high-octane gains for investors. While that rise would likely lift the entire sector, Devon Energy (NYSE:DVN) and Marathon Oil (NYSE:MRO)could outperform in that scenario.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Devon Energy (NYSE:DVN) is one of the top oil and gas producers in the country. However, after running into some production problems earlier in the year, shares of the shale giant have tumbled nearly 15% even though oil prices are still moving higher. Consequently, Devon Energy’s stock sells for one of the lowest valuations in its peer group.
