Top 10 Canadian Stocks To Own Right Now

Bellatrix Exploration (NYSE:BXE) has now nearly eliminated its bank debt and has reduced its overall debt to a bit over $400 million CAD (a bit over $300 million USD) after its latest asset sale. It appears capable of delivering single-digit production growth at strip prices, but faces the challenge of fairly weak natural gas prices after 2017. I think that Bellatrix may have some upside from sub $1 USD per share, but probably needs an upward shift in natural gas futures to be able to get to the mid-$1 range and above. Bellatrix is set to release its 2017 plans soon, so I may revise my expectations depending on the information.

Please note that while Bellatrix primarily reports in Canadian dollars, this article uses US dollars unless otherwise noted.

Primarily A Natural Gas Company

Bellatrix is primarily a natural gas company, with approximately 76% of its estimated 2017 production coming from natural gas. In addition, NGLs make up the majority of its non-natural gas production, so oil and condensate is under 10% of its estimated 2017 production and accounts for around 24% of its estimated 2017 revenue. While the OPEC agreement does help Bellatrix, its future is mostly tied to natural gas prices, which look good for 2017 and early 2018, but have a mixed outlook beyond then.

Troubled mid cap restaurant stock Chipotle Mexican Grill, Inc (NYSE: CMG) reported Q2 2017 earnings after the market closed today. Comparable restaurant sales improved primarily due to an increase in customer visits, along with an increase in average check as a result of a reduction in promotional activity. Food costs were 34.1% of revenue, a decrease of 10 basis points as compared to the second quarter of 2016 ashigher avocado costs were offset by lower costs from bringing the preparation of lettuce and bell peppers back intorestaurants, as well as the benefit of menu price increases in select restaurants in the second quarter of 2017, and a decrease in paper usage and costs. Net income increased 161% to $66.7 million.

Top 10 Canadian Stocks To Own Right Now: Natural Gas(NG)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By James E. Brumley]

When an investor thinks of Canadian gold mining stocks, NovaGold Resources Inc. (USA) (NYSEMKT:NG) and Yamana Gold Inc. (USA) (NYSE:AUY) are often the first names to come to mind. And well they should. Yamana Gold is a $2.5 billion giant, and NovaGold Resources seems to have been around forever.

Those two icons aren’t the only way to tap into Canada’s sizeable gold mining industry though. There’s a small, up-and-coming player called Taranis Resources Inc. (OTCMKTS:TNREF, TSX:TRO) that could end up becoming another key fixture of the country’s mining landscape.

Taranis develops mineral deposits into mine-ready projects. Its primary project right now — and it’s enough to keep the company plenty busy for the next several years — is the Thor property located near Trout Lake, British Columbia. NI 43-101 resource reports (indicated and inferred)suggest Thor contains 6.9 million ounces of silver, 35,000 ounces gold, 57 million pounds of lead, 79.4 million pounds of zinc and 3.3 Million pounds of copper (roughly a 14 million ounce silver equivalent (“AgEq”) deposit*) laying in wait in a way that lends itself to the establishment of a low-cost, open pit mining operation. That’s roughly $300 million worth of marketable metals, and the estimates have been steadily getting bigger as Tanaris does more survey work.

And 2017 could be a real breakout year for Taranis, as a lot of the work that’s been done to date starts to mean something. It’s got big exploration plans for this year… this spring/summer to be exact.

The Phase 1 program was completed in September of last year, setting the stage for a more defined and much bigger Phase 2 definition-drilling within the next several weeks. This Phase 2 definition drilling slated for the middle of this year will drill down to between 6000 m and 10,000 m.

These so-called first generation target areas are generally well understood areas based on sound geological information includ

Top 10 Canadian Stocks To Own Right Now: Wells Fargo & Company(WFC)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Kumar Abhishek]

Insurance companies earn a significant chunk of their income by investing their float in liquid securities. The Fed had kept interest rates near zero for a long time since the financial crisis, which had in turn impacted investment income of insurance companies. But with the Fed expected to raise interest rates 3 times this year, the earnings of insurance companies are likely to get a boost. Berkshire also has stakes in several banks including Wells Fargo (NYSE:WFC) and Goldman Sachs, which will be another beneficiary of rising interest rates. In fact, Wells Fargo is one of Berkshire’slargest holdings. The administration’s proposal tomodify the Dodd-Frank act and Consumer Protection Bureau will be another tailwind for banks.

  • [By John Maxfield]

Maxfield: I think we mixed up some numbers. Theirrevenue as a percent of assets is4.92%, which is the highest in its peer group, and itspeer group are the really large, too-big-to-fail banks,JPMorgan Chase(NYSE: JPM), Citigroup(NYSE: C), Bank of America(NYSE: BAC), Wells Fargo(NYSE: WFC), plusother large regional banks. So that’s the largestwith one exception, and that isCapital One(NYSE: COF). The reason that Capital One’srevenue is so high as a percentage of assets is because a very largeportion of its loan portfolioconsists of credit card loans, and those yield,as everybody knows, a lot more than, say, a homemortgage does. So its revenue as a percent of assets isthe top in its peer group. But then,if you translate that over intoprofitability, that’s where that 1.1% return on assets is. When you’retalking about profitability for banks, there’stwo measures that you want to look at: yourreturn on assets andyour return on equity. Return on assets is basically yourunlevered profitability. Your return on equity is your leveredprofitability. Here’s the interesting thing about PNC, andthis is one of the reasons that it doesn’t pop up a lot wheninvestors are looking for the top-performing banks — it’s because theirreturn on common equity last year was8.58%. When you’relooking for a 10% return on equity, you think, that’sactually meaningfully below that standard industry benchmark that you want to see. But the reason that it’s below,as we see with its good return on assets,is just because it’s not very levered, which means it’s a very safe bank that’sstill earning a lot of money if you look at it on a levered basis.

Irene Rosenfeld, CEO of Oreo and Cadbury maker Mondelez, will step down as head of the snack food giant in November. She is currently just one of 32 women to head up a Fortune 500 firm.

And when she does step down, the ranks of female chiefs will diminish.

Rosenfeld is being succeeded by Dirk Van de Put, the president and CEO of McCain Foods, a Canadian company known mainly for its frozen French fries.

Rosenfeld will stay on as Mondelez (MDLZ) chairman until March. Van de Put will then take over that role as well.

Rosenfeld, along with GM (GM) CEO Mary Barra, Pepsi (PEP) CEO Indra Nooyi, IBM (IBM, Tech30) CEO Ginny Rometty and HP Enterprise (HPE, Tech30) CEO Meg Whitman, has been among the most prominent female execs of the past decade.

It’s been an eventful tenure for Rosenfeld, who took over as CEO of Kraft — which at the time owned Mondelez — in 2006. Kraft split into two companies in 2012 and Rosenfeld stayed with Mondelez.

Hot Canadian Stocks To Buy Right Now: Valeant Pharmaceuticals International Inc(VRX)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

We noted earlier that Valeant Pharmaceuticals International (VRX) has popped today after selling assets for more than $2 billion, beginning what many expect to be just the first round of such sales. BMO’s Gary Nachman notes that Valeant had received “a solid price” for its assets. He explains:

The first transaction is the sale of Dendreon (Provenge) to Sanpower Group for $820mn in cash. Provenge is a treatment for prostate cancer and is not core to Valeant; thus, we are not surprised by this asset sale. We estimate Provenge sales of $306mn for 2016, which translates to a multiple of ~2.7x.Valeant has been struggling to accelerate Provenge since it acquired the product, and given that the company does not have a real oncology presence we think this deal makes a lot of sense.

The second transaction is the sale of CeraVe, AcneFree and AMBI to L’Oreal for $1.3bn in cash. These products are OTC skincare brands that we believe are core to Valeant’s dermatology/OTC business; thus, this deal is more surprising to us. However, with annual combined sales for the three products of $168mn, that translates to a multiple of ~7.7x. We think that is a good price and demonstrates Valeant’s willingness to part with some core assets if the valuation makes sense. We view that as a smart business decision given the urgency forValeant to pay down its significant $30bn debt level more aggressively…

There is still more to go with asset sales, but we view this as a good start for Valeant.

Shares of Valeant Pharmaceuticals International have gained 5.5% to $16.19 at 2:02 p.m. today. That’s a solid gain, but less thanthe 12% rise in pre-open trading, and the 8.8% rise at 10:27 a.m.

Hot Canadian Stocks To Buy Right Now: Plains All American Pipeline L.P.(PAA)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Dustin Parrett]

We think Plains All American Pipeline L.P. (NYSE: PAA) is one of the best oil stocks to buy this year. In fact, we see a scenario where PAA stock could jump 20% in 2017.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

The market has pummeled master limited partnerships (MLPs) over the past few years due to the impact the oil market downturn had on their operations and business model. Among the hardest-hit have been oil pipeline MLP Plains All American Pipeline (NYSE:PAA) and gas pipeline giant Energy Transfer Partners (NYSE:ETP), both of which have lost more than half their value over the last three years. That persistent slump comes even though their turnaround strategies are beginning to gain steam. While these companies still have some work to do before they’re back on solid ground, both could deliver significant returns as they complete their plans and the oil market continues rebounding over the next few years. That upside potential makes them compelling options for investors with a higher tolerance for risk.

Hot Canadian Stocks To Buy Right Now: NEW GOLD INC.(NGD)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

The stock market lost ground on Monday, sending major market benchmarks lower by more than half a percentage point. The Dow lost its grip on the 20,000 mark in the wake of concerns about economic growth and new U.S. immigration policy, and some believe that the broader geopolitical climate could have a negative impact on global commerce that in turn could start affecting multinational corporations’ business prospects. In addition, bad news from some individual companies weighed on the markets, and Transocean (NYSE:RIG), Rite Aid (NYSE:RAD), and New Gold (NYSEMKT:NGD) were among the worst performers on the day. Below, we’ll look more closely at these stocks to tell you why they did so poorly.

Top 5 Canadian Stocks To Invest In Right Now

I like to allocate anywhere between 5-15% of my portfolio to lottery stocks. Usually they are cyclical or have a lot of leverage. And most of the time there is some sort of catalyst that will unlock value on the horizon. I would not advice large positions in any of these stocks. It is also best not to spend large amounts of time analyzing them as they will be small positions and are depending on some factors that are hard to analyze. My analysis will be largely quantitative.

Civeo Corp

Civeo corp (NYSE:CVEO) is a provider of remote housing for the natural resource industry in Canada and Australia. In 2015 the Canadian segment generated 60% of EBITDA and the Australian segment 40%. Civeo has 19 lodges and villages with an aggregate of 23,000 rooms. Some numbers:

Market cap of $210 million Net debt of $340 million maturing in 2019 Tangible book value of $485 million (for what it is really worth) Currently cash flow break even Utilization of assets of 65%

This stock is depending on oil coal and gas, but not necessarily all of them. In 2012 the company generated $350 million of operating income at occupancy of 93%. That is a 0.6x operating income multiple! Which seems a bit low. Especially since Australian coal prices have rallied already, and they can probably survive this for a few years.

ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) has worked hard to differentiate itself from other oil companies by focusing on creating value for investors as opposed to growing at all costs. That plan continued paying dividends during the first quarter, as the company blew past expectations. That strong showing sets the U.S. oil giant up for an exceptional year.

Oil exploration is a risky business. Not only does it cost a lot of money, but the odds of drilling a dry hole are very high. Back on March 1st, I wrote that Royal Bank of Canada (NYSE:RY) was “a great value” with shares down at $51. Today, US shares of Royal sit at $61, a significant appreciation in value over the last six months. Overall, that would be a gain of about 19%. Not bad at all.

Courtesy of Google Finance.

Shares are significantly higher today. In addition, Royal Bank of Canada has since come out with its second quarter earnings. It also announced an increase of the quarterly dividend to $0.83 Canadian, another increase of 2%. That would represent an annualized increase of 5% on constant, Canadian dollars, because earlier it had increased its dividend once already. This article takes a look at Royal’s latest quarter as well as what investors can expect going forward.

Oil prices haven’t gotten off to the fast start many expected, falling around 6% on average during the first quarter of the year. That slump came despite OPEC’s best efforts since producing nations have achieved fairly good compliance on their planned output cuts. That said, despite the lackluster oil market, we still see some interestingopportunities in the oil market. Three stocks we really like right now are DistributionNOW(NYSE:DNOW),Phillips 66(NYSE:PSX), andConocoPhillips(NYSE:COP), which all should do well in the current oil market.

Top 5 Canadian Stocks To Invest In Right Now: Nu Skin Enterprises Inc.(NUS)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Citigroup’s Beth Kite calls Nu Skin Enterprises’ (NUS) earnings and guidance “awfully disappointing.” She explains why:

“Frustrating” Describes 4Q15 & 2016 Guidance:Nu Skin (i) reported 4Q15 EPS of $0.62, 11 cents below consensus and us, and (ii) lowered 2016 EPS guidance, from $3.25-$3.40 to $2.40-$2.60.Nu Skin had three LTO’s in 4Q152 succeeded and 1 failed. The failure had far less to do with the product than with the sales strategy…

Is Guidance Too Conservative or Is It Really This Bad? We get that Me failed to sell well in South Korea with the 12-month cartridge commitment. But given the strength in reps globally, the strength of Youth from its two LTOs in 2H15, and good results from Me when sold in Japan without the 12-month commitment, we wonder if guidance is aggressive to the downside. Indeed, the word “conservative” was said a lot by mgmt on the brief earnings call when describing guidance revisions.

Maintaining Buy: While we now have less confidence in mgmt, from an external perspective, to forecast its results accurately, and from an internal perspective, to course correct quicklyi.e., why didn’t they drop the 12-month plan for Me in South Korea when it so obviously wasn’t workingwe are still confident in Youth & Me. The rep growth in South Asia/Pacific from Youth in 3Q led to better 4Q sales than we’d expected, Youth’s Americas LTO in 4Q drove lc sales up 26% YoY, and Me not only sold through in Japan in 4Q but also drove reps higher. We imagine that investors may have little patience or confidence in Nu Skin for a while, understandably. But the bar seems set fairly low now, so we are cautiously optimistic that Nu Skin can dig itself out of this hole as we go through 2016 and Me & Youth roll out more fully.

Shares of Nu Skin have tumbled 13% to $27.31 at 2:11 p.m. today.

  • [By Scott Rubin]

Stock gainers included Mercadolibre Inc (NASDAQ: MELI), up almost 14 percent, and Nu Skin Enterprises, Inc. (NYSE: NUS), which added 12 percent. The positive gains in both stocks were due to strong earnings reports. Shares of Liberty Interactive Group (NASDAQ: QVCA) plunged almost 22 percent on Friday due to disappointing sales growth in its fiscal second quarter. Pharmaceutical giant Bristol-Myers Squibb Co (NYSE: BMY) lost 16 percent after a disappointing study involving its Opdivo drug.

  • [By Craig Jones]

Nu Skin Enterprises, Inc. (NYSE: NUS) is trading sharply higher on Friday, but options traders are buying puts in the name, said Jon Najarian. Traders were buying the June 50 puts and they paid around 6 percent for them, so they don't see much upside in Nu Skin Enterprises, explained Najarian. He followed the trade and he is planning to hold the position for a month.

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Nu Skin Enterprises (NUS) is a direct selling company, which develops and distributes personal care products and nutritional supplements that are sold under the Nu Skin and Pharmanex brands. This stock closed up 5.4% at $92.96 in Monday’s trading session.

    Monday’s Volume: 2 million

    Three-Month Average Volume: 900,802

    Volume % Change: 85%

From a technical perspective, NUS ripped higher here right above some near-term support at $85 with heavy upside volume. This move pushed shares of NUS into breakout and new 52-week-high territory, since the stock took out some near-term overhead resistance levels at $88.20 to $89.69. This move also pushed shares of NUS above the upper-end of its recent range that saw the stock trend between $82 to just above $89.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in NUS as long as it’s trending above support at $85 and then once it sustains a move or close above Monday’s high of $93.33 with volume that this near or above 900,802 shares. If we get that move soon, then NUS will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that move are $100 to $105.

The Canadian energy companies may be out of favor, but that has not stopped several of them from posting decent operating results. Investors can invest in Canadian companies far more cheaply than Permian operators. Yet, the results in Canada appear every bit as competitive. Obsidian Energy (OBE) just reported about C$.38 per share cash flow. That is very roughly one-fourth of the current selling price. Cash flow increased despite the WCS price weakness and all the headlines about the challenges facing Canadian producers.

Top 5 Canadian Stocks To Buy For 2018: Silver Wheaton Corp(SLW)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Rich Duprey]

Silver Wheaton (NYSE:SLW), of course, is a streamer like Sandstorm and Franco, but it is the largest in the precious-metals industry, and arguably the best-known, because its business model came to define what streaming is. Although it is known primarily for its silver contracts, Silver Wheaton also has sizable gold production that makes it worth your attention.

Top 5 Canadian Stocks To Buy For 2018: ConocoPhillips(COP)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Oil exploration is a risky business. Not only does it cost a lot of money, but the odds of drilling a dry hole are very high. Just ask ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP), which recorded $432 million of deepwater dry hole costs last year. It’s a problem the company is working to address by stepping away from deepwater exploration so that it can deliver steadier returns for investors.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Shares of ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) continued rallying last month, rising another 10%, which put them up more than 40% over the past year. Fueling April’s surge — which added more than $7.5 billion to the company’s market cap — was a combination of higher oil prices, another oil discovery in Alaska, and strong first-quarter results.

The number of ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP) shares short rose to 24.44 million from the previous level of 23.91 million. Shares were trading at $64.80, within a 52-week range of $42.27 to $67.30.

FAANG stocks are attempting to rebound today after a brutal sell-off hit the Nasdaq components Tuesday. The social media giant Facebook Inc. (Nasdaq: FB) will report earnings after the bell, but it’s likely that analysts are more interested in the company’s ongoing response to a data scandal that rocked investor sentiment and spurred privacy fears during the first quarter. Wall Street forecasts EPS of $1.36 on top of $11.45 billion in revenue.
Right now, the 10-year interest rate is sitting on the border of 3%. And this news has many investors jittery about the impact on the stock market and the broader economy. Of course, many people forget that interest rates remain historically low for this stage of an economic expansion. And inflation targets remain stubbornly elusive for members of the U.S. Federal Reserve. The truth is that investors have little to worry about regarding interest rates. Instead, they should listen to Money Morning Chief Investment Strategist Keith Fitz-Gerald, who offered his insight to Fox Business Network earlier this week. Here’s what Keith had to say.
Three Stocks to Watch Today: TWTR, CS, GE
General Electric Co. (NYSE: GE) is under pressure to fire its auditor of 109 years, KPMG (for perspective, GE began its longtime relationship with KPMG a year after the first Model-T was built). Shareholder rights firms Glass-Lewis and Institutional Shareholder Services are spearheading the change and will push for adjustments during the firm’s annual shareholder meeting. The move comes after a calamitous year for GE, which saw the company become the worst-performing Dow component of 2017.
Twitter Inc. (NYSE TWTR) will lead a very busy day of earnings reports. The social media giant is expected to report EPS of $0.12 on top of $609.8 million in revenue.
