Top 5 Energy Stocks To Buy For 2019: Shell Midstream Partners, L.P.(SHLX)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Reuben Gregg Brewer]

There’s an interesting dichotomy here, however. Crestwood was looking to stay financially disciplined, but it also needed to invest to grow. Doing both at the same time is difficult, which is why it partnered up with Con Ed in the Marcellus region, Shell Midstream Partners LP (NYSE:SHLX) and First Reserve in the Delaware Basin, and Williams Partners (NYSE:WPZ) in the Powder River basin. These agreements allow Crestwood to keep expanding its business without having to foot the entire bill for the investments.

Most investors have probably heard of energy giants Royal Dutch Shell (NYSE:RDS-A) (NYSE:RDS-B), Dominion Energy (NYSE:D), and TransCanada (NYSE:TRP). Fewer, however, are likely familiar with their publicly traded master limited partnerships (MLPs): Shell Midstream Partners (NYSE:SHLX), Dominion Energy Midstream Partners (NYSE:DM), and TC Pipelines (NYSE:TCP). That might be a good thing, as the market has beaten up the latter trio this year, sending their valuations south.

Wall Street suffered a sharp drop on Tuesday, with major benchmarks posting substantial declines in response to a combination of economic factors. The yield on the 10-year Treasury bond climbed above 3% for the first time since 2014, but of greater concern to many market participants were remarks in major corporate earnings reports suggesting that business conditions had likely hit their peak and were poised to deteriorate going forward. With raw materials costs starting to pick up, many manufacturers are reporting inflationary pressures that could hurt profits. Yet even as the broader indexes fell, some individual companies had good news to report. Sanmina (NASDAQ:SANM), Helix Energy Solutions (NYSE:HLX), and Weatherford International (NYSE:WFT) were among the best performers on the day. Here’s why they did so well.

  • [By Paul Ausick]

  • [By Tyler Crowe]

Weatherford International (NYSE:WFT) has been an undead company for several years now. Despite the fact that it hasn’t produced a profitable year since 2012, has been burning through cash for longer, and has more debt than the total capitalization of the business, it somehow hasn’t gone bankrupt. This entire time, management has been promising a turnaround with ambitious plans to reduce its costs, but these efforts have been all for naught as its financial situation continues to worsen.

Top 10 Energy Stocks To Buy Right Now

Monday was a big day on Wall Street, with major benchmarks moving generally higher to start the week. Strong performance in the energy market once again led stocks higher, including a nice gain in oil prices to move above the $72-per-barrel mark. The small-cap Russell 2000 Index hit another record high, but some companies reported news that prevented them from participating in the broader-based rally. Fifth Third Bancorp (NASDAQ:FITB), Qudian (NYSE:QD), and U.S. Steel (NYSE:X) were among the worst performers on the day. Here’s why they did so poorly.

Did Fifth Third pay too much?

Shares of Fifth Third Bancorp fell 8% after the company announced that it would purchase Chicago-based MB Financial for $4.7 billion. For its part, Fifth Third believes that the deal will “creat[e] a leading retail and commercial franchise in the attractive Chicago market” for financial institutions. Yet the share price decline reflects investor worries that Fifth Third might have paid too much for MB. The cash and stock deal includes MB shareholders receiving cash of just $5.54 per share, with the remaining 90% of total consideration coming in the form of 1.45 shares of Fifth Third stock for every MB share. It’s fairly typical for shares of an acquirer in a merger involving mostly stock to see declines, but the extent of Fifth Third’s retreat indicates at least some skepticism regarding the price of the deal.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

The IEA’s forecast bodes well for oil stocks, especially those that have underperformed during the rally over the past year. Two that stand out are Newfield Exploration (NYSE:NFX) and Apache (NYSE:APA), since both have lost value even though oil has been red-hot. Because of that, they trade at dirt cheap valuations versus their peers. That underperformance doesn’t make sense given the growth these companies can deliver at much lower oil prices.

This strategy of acquiring assets from a large parent company to grow an MLP’s payout has worked well over the years. Refining giant Phillips 66 (NYSE:PSX) has been one of the most successful with this strategy since creating Phillips 66 Partners (NYSE:PSXP) in 2013. At that time, Phillips 66 launched an ambitious plan to grow its MLP’s distribution at a 30% compound annual rate through 2018 via a steady stream of dropdown transactions. Phillips 66 Partners is right on target, having increased the payout at a 31% compound annual growth rate since the IPO while maintaining solid financial metrics, including covering the payout with cash flow by a very comfortable 1.33 times last quarter and maintaining a conservative debt-to-EBITDA ratio of 3.2 in 2017. This strategy has also richly rewarded investors in Phillips 66 Partners, which has generated a total return of 89% since its IPO despite a recent sell-off, easily ahead of the S&P 500’s nearly 73% total return over that time frame.

Top 10 Energy Stocks To Own For 2019: Phillips 66 Partners LP(PSXP)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Reuben Gregg Brewer]

In the roughly five years since Phillips 66 Partners LP (NYSE:PSXP) has been publicly traded, its enterprise value has increased dramatically, going from around $2.5 billion to nearly $9.5 billion. But things are changing and the midstream partnership’s future growth isn’t likely to look like its past growth. Here are three challenges facing high-yielding Phillips 66 Partners as it looks to move into a new stage of its corporate life.

  • [By Reuben Gregg Brewer]

Investing in midstream master limited partnerships is generally all about the distributions, which the tax-efficient corporate structure is designed to provide to unitholders. However, that doesn’t always mean a high distribution yield is the goal, which is the key to determining if Holly Energy Partners, LP(NYSE:HEP) or Phillips 66 Partners LP (NYSE:PSXP) is the better buy. Here’s what you need to know to make an informed decision between these stocks.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

The Sweeny Hub expansion is a “key part of our midstream growth strategy,” said Garland, as it “further optimizes our integrated NGL value chain.” That chain starts with a link to fast-growing production basins to the West via pipelines co-owned by DCP Midstream and the company’s other MLP,Phillips 66 Partners (NYSE:PSXP). Last month, those companies announced that they would connect their Southern Hills NGL pipeline to the DJ Basin, which would bring more NGL volumes toward Phillips 66’s Sweeny Hub. Meanwhile, the companies are also expanding their Sand Hills NGL Pipeline to move volumes from the Permian Basin toward Sweeny.

Top 10 Energy Stocks To Watch Right Now

Dr. Kent Moors

For the last few days, oil prices have been trading in a very narrow range between $42 and $45 a barrel. They won’t be staying there for long.

You see, there are two factors keeping prices locked in that range. One is short term, here in the United States.

And it was just resolved today…

The other is OPEC’s long-term strategy to crowd out competing oil producers. Rumors would have you believe this will change before the end of the month, at the upcoming International Energy Forum (IEF) summit in Algiers.

That’s not going to happen…

Yet.

Here’s when OPEC will change its strategy… and what the Algiers meeting is really about…

Top 10 Energy Stocks To Watch Right Now: Foresight Energy LP(FELP)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Laurie Kulikowski]

The change in net income from the same quarter one year ago has exceeded that of the Oil, Gas & Consumable Fuels industry average, but is less than that of the S&P 500. The net income has significantly decreased by 82.3% when compared to the same quarter one year ago, falling from $45.72 million to $8.07 million.

  • [By Laurie Kulikowski]

After the recent distribution cut, Foresight’s distribution coverage is over 6.0x with much of the future cash flow dedicated to reducing leverage. It has over 80% of its coal sales priced for next year and its costs should improve as the low cost Hillsboro mine comes back into production early next year. It is also benefitting from cost synergies with the Murray operations. We believe Foresight’s new distribution level is sustainable. With its 15.5% yield, we feel FELP could be attractive to income seeking investors.

  • [By Laurie Kulikowski]

The debt-to-equity ratio is very high at 18.59 and currently higher than the industry average, implying increased risk associated with the management of debt levels within the company. To add to this, FELP has a quick ratio of 0.56, this demonstrates the lack of ability of the company to cover short-term liquidity needs.

  • [By Laurie Kulikowski]

We rate FORESIGHT ENERGY LP as a Sell with a ratings score of E+. This is based on a variety of negative investment measures, which should drive this stock to significantly underperform the majority of stocks that we rate. The company’s weaknesses can be seen in multiple areas, such as its generally high debt management risk, poor profit margins, generally disappointing historical performance in the stock itself, deteriorating net income and feeble growth in its earnings per share.

  • [By Laurie Kulikowski]

The gross profit margin for FORESIGHT ENERGY LP is currently lower than what is desirable, coming in at 33.76%. It has decreased from the same quarter the previous year. Regardless of the weak results of the gross profit margin, the net profit margin of 3.18% is above that of the industry average.

  • [By Laurie Kulikowski]

Despite any intermediate fluctuations, we have only bad news to report on this stock’s performance over the last year: it has tumbled by 83.17%, worse than the S&P 500’s performance. Consistent with the plunge in the stock price, the company’s earnings per share are down 82.85% compared to the year-earlier quarter. Naturally, the overall market trend is bound to be a significant factor. However, in one sense, the stock’s sharp decline last year is a positive for future investors, making it cheaper (in proportion to its earnings over the past year) than most other stocks in its industry. But due to other concerns, we feel the stock is still not a good buy right now.

Natural gas had been under pressure all year, especially after this past February was the warmest since 1954. By mid-March, gas had lost a quarter of its value because of an oversupplied market. However, it awoke from that slumber toward the end of March thanks in part to the triumphant return of winter, which pounded parts of the nation with a major late-season snowstorm. That storm drove up demand for gas, sending the stocks of several gas producers soaring late last month, including Rice Energy and larger rivalsChesapeake Energy (NYSE:CHK) and Southwestern Energy (NYSE:SWN), which both rose more than 5%.

Raymond James’s John Freeman reiterated a Market Perform rating on the stock:

Capex guidance of $1.175-1.275 billion was 18% above Street at $1.04 and 13% above RJ $1.08 billion. The production growth implies the company is taking the middle road of their previous growth scenario whereby $1.25 billion/yr of capex thru 2018 translates to an 8-12% CAGR. Advisors’ Opinion:

It wasn’t just Marathon that got clipped as the eight worst-performing stocks in the S&P 500 came from the energy sector, including Murphy Oil (MUR), which fell 6.7% to $25.87, Devon Energy (DVN), which slid 6.5% to $40.72, and Chesapeake Energy (CHK), which stumbled 6.1% to $4.94. No surprise, then, that the Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLE) slumped 2.6% to $69.65.

Top 10 Energy Stocks To Watch Right Now: Marathon Petroleum Corporation(MPC)

We’ve seen this happen before. In December, shares of Russian oil company Rosneft jumped 21% in two weeks when it was acquired by Glencore Plc. (LON: GLEN). And back in 2015, MarkWest Energy Partners LP (NYSE: MWE) enjoyed a similar jump when it was acquired by Marathon Petroleum Corp (NYSE: MPC).

Energy was the other S&P sector in the green yesterday, helped by rising oil prices and excitement about the tie up between Marathon Petroleum Corp (NYSE: MPC) and Andeavor (NYSE: ANDV). Devon Energy Corp (NYSE: DVN) was the biggest gainer in the sector, rising more than 5 percent after the company raised its annual production forecast. (See more on oil below.)

Marathon Petroleum Corp. (MPC) – “MPC offers attractive exposure to MPLX upside (Buy
rated, covered by Jerren Holder), IMO 2020 regulations, widening WCS and WTI
crude differentials and peer-leading dividend growth. Given weather impacts,
especially to Speedway, we are below consensus for MPC for first-quarter 2018, as well, but
expect investors to look through this given a strong second quarter and 2018-2020 outlook.”

Over the past several quarters, Marathon Petroleum (NYSE:MPC) has presented investors with an awfully attractive investment case. While earnings suffered a bit in 2016 and early 2017 from weak refining margins across the U.S., the company continued to churn out cash that it then gave back to investors in the form of sizable dividend increases and stock repurchase plans.

Top 10 Energy Stocks To Watch Right Now: Devon Energy Corporation(DVN)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Devon Energy (NYSE:DVN) is one of the top oil and gas producers in the country. However, after running into some production problems earlier in the year, shares of the shale giant have tumbled nearly 15% even though oil prices are still moving higher. Consequently, Devon Energy’s stock sells for one of the lowest valuations in its peer group.

  • [By Craig Jones]

On CNBC's Fast Money Halftime Report, Jon Najarian said traders were buying calls in Devon Energy Corp (NYSE: DVN) in the first half of the trading session on Thursday.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

While crude prices stumbled into 2016, they found their footing by mid-year and roared back to life, ending the year up about 42%. Those rising prices lifted most oil stocks. However, a handful of large-cap oil stocks rose above the crowd by outperforming crude’s rally. Those top-tier performers wereContinental Resources (NYSE:CLR), Devon Energy (NYSE:DVN), Anadarko Petroleum (NYSE:APC), Pioneer Natural Resources (NYSE:PXD), and Cimarex Energy (NYSE:XEC):

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

As expected, EOG Resources’ U.S. oil output came in above the midpoint of its forecast and was up 15% year over year. Fueling that high-end result were the many wells EOG completed across its vast shale portfolio. The company completed 70 wells in the Delaware Basin during the quarter, with several producing more than 2,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (BOE/D) in their first month. While the company didn’t match Devon Energy’s (NYSE:DVN) record-smashing 24,000 BOE/D two-well gusher, its wells were highly productive and generated excellent returns.
