Top 10 Value Stocks To Buy Right Now

Our Top Pick for income investors for 2017 is a preferred stock issued by a  bank that we consider one of the best-run in the country, asserts Jack Adamo, editor of Insider’s Plus.

U.S. Bancorp (USB) is one of the banks in which Warren Buffett has had a large stake for a long time. It has a preferred stock I’ve watched for a long time.

I recommend buying the U.S. Bancorp Fixed/Floating Depositary Shares Non-Cumulative Perpetual Preferred Stock A (USB-A).

Despite the security of its preferred status, we get inflation protection because the dividend is the higher of 3.5% or the Three-Month LIBOR rate, plus 1.02%.

LIBOR is currently 0.9971%, so the shares pay the 3.5% minimum coupon, but with the shares trading at $870, the stock yields 4.0%.

The shares are redeemable at $1000 face value at any time. Redemption at face value would give us about a 15% bonus from the current price.

Not only does Jana consider the deal price overvalued, but it looks to redirect EQT’s focus to a breakup of pipeline operations to transform the core company into an exploration & production firm. The pipelines already trade publicly under EQT Midstream Partners LP (NYSE: EQM) and EQT GP Holdings LP (NYSE: EQGP).

Companies in the oil storage business can take advantage of what is known as contango, which is when forward prices are higher than current prices, allowing the purchase of cheap oil to be stored and sold at a later date while securing income using derivatives. Five companies that appear to be in a good position to take advantage of reduced oil storage capacity are Magellan Midstream Partners (NYSE: MMP), Enterprise Products Partners (NYSE: EDP), Spectra Energy Partners (NYSE: SEP), Buckeye Partners (NYSE: BPL) and EQT Midstream Partners (NYSE: EQM).

Top 10 Value Stocks To Buy Right Now: Snap-On Incorporated(SNA)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Thursday ended in the red for most major benchmarks on Wall Street, with the Dow trading down by triple digits at times before climbing back toward the close. After having bounced back sharply in recent days, stocks seemed to lose upward momentum, and interest rate fears returned to the market. The yield on the 10-year Treasury bond once again moved above the 2.9% mark, and shorter-term Treasurys had yields reach levels they haven’t seen in years. Yet even though the overall market was ready to take a break, some companies still enjoyed good news that lifted their shares. Bank of New York Mellon (NYSE:BK), Snap-on (NYSE:SNA), and Rigel Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:RIGL) were among the best performers on the day. Here’s why they did so well.

Snap-on Incorporated (SNA) is my choice for the Best Stocks for 2016 competition. At a market cap of $10 billion, I doubt it will double over the next year, as some of the smaller companies in this competition might be able to.

That said, Snap-on, which manufactures and markets hand tools and diagnostic equipment, is a rock-solid company with an attractive valuation and impressive growth. It goes for 22 times earnings, pays a consistent and modest dividend, and has been around since 1920.

As cars get more tech-heavy and complicated, newer tools and better diagnostics will be needed — and that’s SNA’s bread ‘n’ butter.

  • [By Chris Lange]

Guess, Inc. (NYSE: GES) reported fiscal third-quarter financial results after markets closed on Wednesday. The company said that it had $0.11 in earnings per share (EPS) and $536.3 million in revenue. Thomson Reuters had consensus estimates that called for $0.14 in EPS and $548.37 million in revenue. The same period from last year had $0.15 in EPS and $520.96 million in revenue.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Denim specialistGuess? (NYSE:GES) has struggled for a long time, and tough conditions in the overall retail market have been only part of the story. After signs of a possible turnaround early in 2016, the company has more recently raised new doubts about its ability to keep moving forward, especially in its home territory in the Americas. Coming into Wednesday’s fiscal fourth-quarter financial report, Guess? investors wanted to see decent sales growth, although they were prepared to deal with falling earnings. Yet the results that the jeans maker posted fell short of those expectations, and guidance for the coming fiscal year was ugly.
