Apparently, investors are beginning to catch on to the fact that Tesla CEO Elon Musk has a severe case of a behavioral condition known as the planning fallacy. People who suffer from the planning fallacy are serial offenders when it comes to projects coming in over budget, late, and with fewer features than promised. The New York Times reported that Telsa’s main problematic issues pertain to a slower timetable than expected for the introduction of the Model 3, along with problems that relate to the manufacture of its battery packs.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Shares of Arch Coal Inc (NYSE:ARCH) are slumping today, down nearly 15% as of 1:04 p.m. EDT, after the company reported lackluster first-quarter results and a muted outlook for2018.

The stock market climbed sharply on Thursday, responding well to favorable earnings results from several corners of the market. Major benchmarks were up 1% to 2%, with particularly good performance from the Nasdaq Composite thanks to the tech sector’s outperformance during the day. Yet some stocks suffered from bad news that cast doubt on companies’ ability to benefit from generally favorable business conditions. MGM Resorts International (NYSE:MGM), Arch Coal (NYSE:ARCH), and LendingTree (NASDAQ:TREE) were among the worst performers on the day. Here’s why they did so poorly.

Top Clean Energy Stocks To Watch For 2019: Nemaska Lithium Inc. (NMKEF)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By ]

Canadian hard-rock lithium chemicals company Nemaska Lithium (OTCQX:NMKEF) is presently at the end of completing a $500 million capital raise which will allow the company to expand into Phase 2 production of the its facility in Quebec. The company has closed an equity deal valued at nearly $100 million from Japans SoftBank (OTCPK:SFTBY), executed a streaming agreement with Orion Mine Finance LF valued at over $150 million, and engaged with such high-quality financial groups including Clarkson Platou Securities and Pareto Securities as managers of the bond issuance. Further, Nemaska has signed multiple offtake agreements, including NorthVolt, FMC, Softbank and Johnson Matthey Battery Materials, for the purchase of its lithium chemicals once production begins.

Nemaska Lithium (OTCQX:NMKEF) provided a project update and announced a C$50 million bought deal with shares selling for C$1.05 a piece. The fresh funds will be put to work at the Whabouchi development project, which appears to be progressing well. Commercial-scale production is expected by Q1 2019.

The other producing lithium miners, and soon to be producers. I have discussed these previously in detail here, here and here. Needless to say, the top 3 producers are non-pure plays (SQM (NYSE:SQM), Albemarle (NYSE:ALB), and FMC Corp. (NYSE:FMC)). The top pure play currently producing miners are Orocobre (ASX:ORE) (OTCPK:OROCF), Tianqi Lithium (SHE:002466), Jiangxi Ganfeng Lithium, Galaxy Resources, Mineral Resources [ASX:MIN] (OTC:MALRF), and Neometals [ASX:NMT] (OTC:RRSSF). The near-term producers include Altura Mining [ASX:AJM] (OTCPK:ALTAF), Pilbara Minerals (ASX:PLS) (OTC:PILBF), Kidman Resources (ASX:KDR), Critical Elements, Nemaska Lithium (OTCQX:NMKEF) [TSX:NMX], Lithium Americas (OTCQX:LACDF) [TSX:LAC], Lithium X (OTCQX:LIXXF) (TSXV:LIX), Neo Lithium, and Bacanora Minerals (OTC:BCRMF) [TSXV:BCN], Advantage Lithium (OTCQB:AVLIF) [AAL], European Metals (OTCPK:MNTCF, ASX:EMH, AIM:EMH) and Pure Energy (OTCQB:PEMIF) [PE].

Nemaska Lithium (OTCQX:NMKEF) has successfully commissioned the electrolysis cell of its Phase 1 plant in Shawinigan. More heavy lifting will be necessary before the lithium miner will be able to report successful processing of ore from its Whabouchi mine, but boxes are certainly ticked by this company.

Joe is a fan of Australian-listed Galaxy Resources (GXY on the ASX), acompany with a hard-rock operation in production in Australia, a world-class brine development project (Sal de Vida) in Argentina that has a bank feasibility study on it, and a promising exploration project in Quebec, Canada, near Nemaska’s (OTCQX:NMKEF) Whabouchi project. GXY is up 60% in just the past three months.

The ongoing trade rift between the United States and China continues to plague international markets. Despite reports that both countries are working behind the scenes to prevent additional detrimental trade policies, both countries recently proposed tens of billions in new tariffs on one another. The United States has accused China of widespread intellectual property theft, while China has accused the United States of unfair trade practices, including price manipulation in the agricultural industry. This morning, it’s worth noting that proposed tariffs on U.S. business jets will likely not provide a competitive advantage to foreign competition. Reuters reports that Chinese aviation executives do not see the layer of protectionism as a way to bolster the nation’s local market. Check back to Money Morning today for more insight on how the ongoing trade war could affect your investments.
Finally, investors will continue to monitor ongoing developments in Washington around the presidency of Donald Trump. The White House has asked a federal judge to block prosecutors from reviewing any files seized from his lawyer’s office during a raid by the FBI last week. The agency seized a trove of documents from lawyer Michael Cohen’s office as part of an investigation into a payment of hush money. The spat between the White House and the FBI continues a day after former FBI Director James Comey called Trump “morally unfit to be president.”

Top Clean Energy Stocks To Watch For 2019: Lithium Americas Corp. (LACDF)

Advisors’ Opinion:

Still, reading between the lines, it’s been clear which names he has liked over the months and years. Lithium Americas (OTCQX:LACDF) and SQM (NYSE:SQM) are prime examples. Consider that LAC shares have more than doubled from an early July low of C$0.78 (it closed at C$1.70 on Sept. 15th) when rumblings suggested that SQM might not move forward on the LAC/SQM Cauchari-Olaroz project. Joe was among the first to squash those rumors, setting up what turned out to be a highly profitable buying opportunity. SQM is up 120% in the past 12 months (by comparison, the Global X Lithium ETF (LIT) is up 54%, and the S&P 500 Index is up 16%).
