Top Oil Stocks For 2019

One of the largest drillers in Canada, Calgary-based Ensign Energy Services Inc (TSE: ESI) reported Q2 earnings on Tuesday and these results give a very good insight as to where the Canadian and US oil and oilfield industries stand and where they are heading. Revenue rose 13% to $263.1 million and the net loss was $36.7 million versus a net loss of $33.8 million for the second quarter of 2017 (note that the year-over-year weakening of the US dollar against the Canadian dollar negatively impacted United States and international financial results when translated into Canadian dollars).

However, it gets more interesting when digging deeper into Ensign Energy Services’ earnings:

Canada revenue was $45.5 million (17% of total revenue); United States revenue was $148.1 million (56% of total revenue); and International revenue was $69.5 million (27% of total revenue). Canadian drilling recorded 830 operating days in Q2 2018, a 27% decrease from 1,141 operating days in Q2 2017. Canadian well servicing recorded 13,359 operating hours in Q2 2018, a 13% decrease from 15,291 operating hours in Q2 2017. United States drilling recorded 3,228 operating days in Q2 2018, a 25% increase from 2,590 operating days in Q2 2017. United States well servicing recorded 28,722 operating hours in Q2 2018, a 33% increase from 21,594 operating hours in Q2 2017. International drilling recorded 1,425 operating days in Q2 2018, a 5% decrease from 1,506 operating days recorded in Q2 2017. Operating days were higher in the United States in Q2 2018 when compared to Q2 2017 due to increased demand in oilfield services caused by a price recovery of crude oil and natural gas commodity prices. Operating days were lower in Canada and internationally in Q2 2018 when compared to Q2 2017 mainly due to geopolitical factors and the lack of access for oil and natural gas to markets.

For outlook, the Ensign Energy Services’ earnings report noted tightness aided by countries like Venezuela and Libya having export issues, as well as new sanctions on Iranian oil set to begin in November of 2018. The increase in oil prices will help to continue the strengthening of customer balances sheets and cash flow and this should contribute to increased demand for oilfield services into the future.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

The stock market stayed in a pretty narrow range on Thursday, climbing early in the session but then slowly drifting lower through the afternoon hours. Other financial markets saw mixed moves as well, with 10-year Treasury yields climbing above 3.1% while oil prices stayed comfortably above $70 per barrel. Despite the quiet day, some companies had good news that pushed their shares sharply higher. World Wrestling Entertainment (NYSE:WWE), Chesapeake Energy (NYSE:CHK), and Williams Partners (NYSE:WPZ) were among the best performers on the day. Below, we’ll look more closely at these stocks to tell you why they did so well.

Top Oil Stocks For 2019: Transocean Inc.(RIG)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

The stock market lost ground on Monday, although the declines in some major benchmarks were more extreme than others. A budding financial crisis in Turkey once again captured the attention of investors, as the threat of rising tariffs and escalating diplomatic tension could drive a wedge through the North Atlantic Treaty Organization at a critical time for the geopolitical environment in the region. The repercussions of recent events involving Turkey echoed around the world, and some companies felt the tremors more sharply than others. First Majestic Silver (NYSE:AG), Turkcell Iletisim Hizmetleri (NYSE:TKC), and Transocean (NYSE:RIG) were among the worst performers on the day. Here’s why they did so poorly.

Unless it’s not. Which it may not be. There’s a big cloud of uncertainty hanging over the company, in part thanks to its status as a very small fish in a very big deepwater ocean that’s full of huge, hungry competitors like Transocean (NYSE:RIG) and Ensco (NYSE:ESV). Questions also abound about its parent company, Seadrill (NYSE:SDRL).

Several high-yielding dividend stocks have taken it on the chin this year due to a sell-off in the stock market and rising interest rates. That one-two punch has hit pipeline stocks the hardest, with several top-notch companies tumbling by a double-digit percentage since the start of the year. Three that stand out as excellent options to consider buying now that they’re on sale are Magellan Midstream Partners (NYSE:MMP), Antero Midstream Partners (NYSE:AM), and Enbridge (NYSE:ENB).

This process starts with gathering pipelines, which transports a well’s production to central processing locations that separate oil, natural gas, natural gas liquids (NGLs), and water. The oil then moves by truck, pipeline, or tanker to storage facilities while it waits to go through a refinery or petrochemical complex and get turned into fuel, chemicals, or another oil-based product. While oil companies tend to own some of these midstream assets, especially gathering lines and processing facilities, third parties hold a significant portion of the energy infrastructure in North America. These companies often charge fees for the logistical services provided to oil companies. Master limited partnerships (MLPs) are a noteworthy owner of these assets in the U.S. and most commonly found in the energy midstream sector. MLPs are tax-advantaged entities that pass through most of their income to investors. The largest MLP by enterprise value is Enterprise Products Partners (NYSE:EPD), while other notable ones include Magellan Midstream Partners (NYSE:MMP) and MPLX (NYSE:MPLX).

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

In addition to those pipelines already under construction, companies continue to pitch new projects to shippers in hopes of locking in the next wave of growth. The latest entry into this building boom is the proposed Permian Gulf Coast pipeline, which is a joint venture between Energy Transfer Partners (NYSE:ETP), Magellan Midstream Partners (NYSE:MMP), MPLX (NYSE:MPLX), and Delek US Holdings (NYSE:DK). The line could be in service as soon as mid-2020 if everything goes according to plan.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

The company is also looking at a variety of oil pipeline expansion projects in the Permian Basin, including building the Permian Express-4 pipeline, which could move about 100,000 BPD. On top of that, it’s working on a potentially larger project with its joint venture partner Magellan Midstream Partners (NYSE:MMP). Long noted that the company had made “significant progress with our new 30-inch crude oil pipeline joint-venture project with Magellan and other strategic partners” that would “provide unprecedented flexibility from the Permian Basin.”
